{"id":16843,"date":"2026-02-04T08:56:44","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:56:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=16843"},"modified":"2026-02-04T08:57:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:57:11","slug":"long-jawed-pedunculate-ground-beetle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/long-jawed-pedunculate-ground-beetle\/","title":{"rendered":"Long-jawed Pedunculate Ground Beetle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greetings, BugFans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BugFan Dave shared these spectacular pictures of a very cool beetle that he found last summer \u2013 a ground beetle in the family Carabidae, a huge family with 40,000+ species. It\u2019s in the subfamily Scaritinae, the \u201cPedunculate ground beetles,\u201d so-named for the constriction &#8211; peduncle \u2013 between the wider thorax and abdomen.\u00a0The wonderful \u201cMOBugs\u201d blogspot (\u201cMissouri\u2019s Majority\u201d) suggests that they should be called \u201c<em>Scary pincher ground beetles<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0It\u2019s in the genus\u00a0<em>Scarites\u00a0<\/em>(<em>skar-EYE-tees<\/em>), a genus that numbers about 190 species worldwide with seven or eight (or nine) species in North America, most of them with very small, very southern ranges.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More about the ID of this beetle in a sec.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><u>SCARITES<\/u><\/em>&nbsp;&#8211; THE GENUS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Scarites<\/em>\u00a0beetles are often found under loose rocks and bark, boards, mulch, leaf litter, and debris, on forest\u00a0floors, on or burrowing into moist, sandy soil, in gardens, in residential areas, and at the edge of agricultural fields.\u00a0They\u2019re common, though, alas, the BugLady\u2019s never seen one \u2013 she needs to turn over more logs.\u00a0Their mandibles and general air of invincibility cause some people to mistake them for stag beetles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1209374\">Memphis Bioblitz 2016 Platycerus &#8211; Platycerus quercus &#8211; BugGuide.Net<\/a>, which are in a different family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are shiny and black, with spiky legs and an armored-looking head.\u00a0The elytra (hard wing covers) are ridged\/grooved, and a couple of \u201ccreases\u201d on the shield that covers the thorax form a \u201cT.\u201d Males tend to be larger and \u201ctoothier\u201d than females, with a slightly more bulging head.\u00a0Some sources describe the larvae as looking like \u201c<em>fast-moving millipedes with large jaws<\/em>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2485075\/bgimage\">beetle larva &#8211; Scarites &#8211; BugGuide.Net<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/02\/beetle-big-hdd-ground-scarites-dave25-2-300x200.webp\" alt=\"Top-down view of a shiny black ground beetle (Scarites)\" class=\"wp-image-16845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/02\/beetle-big-hdd-ground-scarites-dave25-2-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/02\/beetle-big-hdd-ground-scarites-dave25-2.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many ground beetles, they are fierce and speedy predators that shelter during the day and hunt at night.\u00a0Pedunculate ground beetles &#8211;\u00a0<em>La m\u00e8re, le p\u00e8re et les enfants<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; eat a variety of surface and soil-dwelling invertebrates like earthworms, slugs and snails, caterpillars, maggots, ants, etc.\u00a0It\u2019s also reported that they eat insect eggs and that they scavenge on dead insects, including dead\u00a0<em>Scarites<\/em>, and that they may eat some plant material.\u00a0They\u2019re considered beneficial around gardens and agricultural fields, though they don\u2019t discriminate between pest and non-pest prey. At an inch-or-so long, they\u2019re big enough so that researchers have attached transmitters to their abdomens to track their activities in agricultural fields! Some ground-foraging songbirds eat them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, several Extension publications offered tips about attracting&nbsp;<em>Scarites<\/em>&nbsp;beetles to your garden, creating a refuge by leaving a portion of lawn bare and\/or un-mowed and\/or brushy (all of which benefits solitary wasps, too), and, as always, by limiting\/eliminating pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BugLady couldn\u2019t find much about their biographies other than the fact they overwinter as both larvae or adults, and the fact that when they\u2019re alarmed, they will fall over, pull in their antennae and legs, stiffen, and play dead.\u00a0One blogger reported a strange, but not unpleasant odor when he handled a \u201cdead\u201d one. The mandibles appear to be Defense Option B. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a video of a\u00a0<em>Scarites<\/em>\u00a0beetle on the \u201cAll Bugs Go to Kevin\u201d blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/AllBugsGoToKevin\/posts\/659539831568469\/\">All Bugs Go to Kevin | Scarites ground beetles (north western Illinois) | Facebook<\/a>, and one of a larva at the original Bug of the Week site\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bugoftheweek.com\/blog\/2020\/10\/12\/an-unusual-but-not-unpleasant-home-invasion-by-a-beneficial-beetle-big-headed-ground-beetle-scarites-subterraneus\">An unusual but not unpleasant home invasion by a beneficial beetle: Big-headed ground beetle, Scarites subterraneus \u2014 Bug of the Week<\/a>, where Professor Raup reports seeing them in his garden, \u201c<em>On several occasions I have seen Scarites larvae dashing across patios and walkways as they move from one planting bed to the next<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So \u2013 which&nbsp;<em>Scarites<\/em>&nbsp;is this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THE LONG-JAWED PEDUNCULATE GROUND BEETLE&nbsp;(Probably)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two most common, most widely-distributed genus members in North America are the Big-headed\/Pedunculate ground beetle (<em>Scarites subterraneus<\/em>)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/906988\">Scarites subterraneus &#8211; BugGuide.Net<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Scarites vicinus<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/919285\/bgpage\">Scarites vicinus &#8211; BugGuide.Net<\/a>, which most sources said has no common name but that one source called the Long-jawed pedunculate ground beetle.\u00a0The two are tough to tell apart, even by experts.\u00a0The BugLady is going to take her usual taxonomic leap and say that this is\u00a0<em>Scarites vicinus<\/em>, based on her reading of the shape of the three antennal segments (antennomeres) \u2013 slightly elongated vs round <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/163900\">Scarites subterraneus vs. &#8220;quadriceps&#8221; &#8211; Scarites &#8211; BugGuide.Net<\/a>. <em>Scarites vicinus<\/em>\u00a0is also larger than\u00a0<em>Scarites subterraneus<\/em>, with a broader head, and the shield on the thorax is \u201crounder.\u201d All of which can be somewhat subjective \u2013 the eye of the beholder.\u00a0There&#8217;s more information available about the Big-headed ground beetle than there is about the Long-jawed pedunculate ground beetle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re found in a few mid-Atlantic states, a couple of Gulf states, and some Great Lakes states \u2013 and South Dakota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks, Dave.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The BugLady<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"taxonomy-post_tag wp-block-post-terms\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/beetle\/\" rel=\"tag\">beetle<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/bug\/\" rel=\"tag\">Bug<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/ground-beetle\/\" rel=\"tag\">Ground Beetle<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/scarites\/\" rel=\"tag\">Scarites<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings, BugFans, BugFan Dave shared these spectacular pictures of a very cool beetle that he found last summer \u2013 a ground beetle in the family Carabidae, a huge family with 40,000+ species.
