  {"id":14319,"date":"2023-09-14T13:55:02","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T18:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=14319"},"modified":"2023-09-21T10:54:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T15:54:20","slug":"golden-green-sweat-bee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/golden-green-sweat-bee\/","title":{"rendered":"Golden Green Sweat Bee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"size-p-sm\">Note: All links leave to external sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Howdy, BugFans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wisconsin is home to between 500 and 600 species of wild bees, ranging in size from today\u2019s sweat bee to bumble bees many times larger (there are about 4,000 bee species in the US).&nbsp;If a small brown or green bee landed on your arm and started sipping salt while you were working\/sweating outside in the summer, you\u2019ve met a sweat bee.&nbsp;Typically, no one is harmed in these encounters unless you brush the bee away roughly.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BugLady\u2019s husband was allergic to sweat bees, but when he went to the allergist to see if desensitization shots were available, the doctor said \u201cWhat\u2019s a sweat bee?\u201d&nbsp; Which didn\u2019t bode well for any shots.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweat bees can be a bear to differentiate (as one site warned, \u201c<em>Many species won\u2019t be identifiable from photos<\/em>\u201d), and a microscope is needed to tell some species apart.&nbsp;Still, this is a seriously tiny sweat bee with an unusual color. So, the BugLady finds herself back out on that taxonomic limb again, but she\u2019s gotten comfortable out there over the years, and she\u2019s calling this one a Golden green sweat bee.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Golden green sweat bees (<em>Augochlorella<\/em>&nbsp;<em>aurata<\/em>) are one of about 100 species in Wisconsin in the family Halictidae, the&nbsp;Sweat, Furrow, Nomiine, and Short-faced Bees.&nbsp;<em>Augochlor<\/em>&nbsp;is a Greek prefix meaning \u201c<em>intensified gold-green<\/em>,\u201d and \u201c<em>aurata<\/em>\u201d means \u201c<em>gilded\u201d or \u201cgolden<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp;Despite their name, most Golden green sweat bees are quite <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1894237\/bgimage\">green<\/a>, but some are <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1272175\/bgimage\">pinkish<\/a>, some are <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1124880\/bgimage\">reddish<\/a>, some are <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1180911\/bgimage\">blue<\/a>, and some are <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/825764\/bgimage\">bi-colored<\/a>. They are about one-fifth of an inch long, with females slightly longer than males.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some Extreme Macros &#8211; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/media\/images\/augochlorella-aurata-f-face-md-boonsboro\">one<\/a>&nbsp;(also available on eBay as a headshot), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/media\/images\/augochlorella-aurata-f-back-md-boonesboro\">two<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/media\/golden-green-sweat-bee-augochlorella-aurata\">three<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2023\/09\/bee-sweat23-4.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2023\/09\/bee-sweat23-4-300x215.webp\" alt=\"Sweat bee pollinating\" class=\"wp-image-14321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2023\/09\/bee-sweat23-4-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2023\/09\/bee-sweat23-4.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They have a patchy northern range mostly east of the Rockies, and of the seven&nbsp;<em>Augochlorella<\/em>&nbsp;species in North America,&nbsp;Golden green sweat bees are found the farthest north.&nbsp;They are common in fields in eastern North America, where they are generalist pollinators that forage on flowers in a bunch of different plant families.&nbsp;Along with wildflowers, they also pollinate agricultural crops like apples, strawberries, alfalfa, tomatoes, and sunflowers. They <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1306100\/bgimage\">carry pollen in hairs on their back legs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vast majority of bees, including many of the Halicitdae and some of the&nbsp;<em>Augochlorella,<\/em>&nbsp;are solitary rather than communal bees \u2013 single Moms who create and provision egg chambers without the help of workers.&nbsp;Golden green sweat bees are flexible about the idea &#8211; at higher latitudes and altitudes (areas that have shorter growing seasons), they tend to be more solitary, but when they\u2019re in warmer climes, they are called \u201c<em>primitively eusocial<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp;Eusocial describes the most advanced social behavior \u2013 think ant hill &#8211; characterized by cooperative brood care, overlapping generations within a colony, division of labor (castes), and reproductive and non-reproductive individuals. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2023\/09\/bee-sweat23-6.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2023\/09\/bee-sweat23-6-300x214.webp\" alt=\"Bee on a flower\" class=\"wp-image-14322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2023\/09\/bee-sweat23-6-300x214.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2023\/09\/bee-sweat23-6.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In favorable climates, the fertile female overwinters and starts the colony in spring, excavating a nest tunnel (<a href=\"https:\/\/actbeekeepers.asn.au\/bee-buzz-box-july-2023-the-catacomb-part-iva-the-facultative-eusocia\/figure-6-nesting-behaviour-of-facultatively-eusocial-augochlorella-aurata-1\/\">here are some&nbsp;diagrams of&nbsp;<em>A. aurata<\/em>&nbsp;nest tunnels<\/a>),&nbsp;collecting pollen and fashioning it into pollen balls for her young,&nbsp;and laying six to eight eggs that will produce both males and females.&nbsp;Newly hatched males leave the nest, but newly-hatched females become workers that care for the queen.&nbsp;Later in the season, she produces another small batch of males and females that will fly out and mate in fall. A fertile female will dig down into the lowest\/warmest part of the nest and hunker down until May, and the beat goes on. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nest are dug in bare ground in woods and fields and can be as deep as 10 inches.&nbsp;The Vermont Center for Ecostudies Vermont Atlas of Life site included a picture of a nest entrance with a turret around the opening, but the BugLady <a href=\"https:\/\/val.vtecostudies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A.-auratta-nest-SPH.jpeg\">didn\u2019t find any other references to that behavior<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neat picture of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/33594\/bgimage\">Golden green sweat bee&nbsp;with a raindrop<\/a>.&nbsp;About the picture, entomologist Eric Eaton wrote. \u201c<em>It might be that the rain dissolved honeydew that had accumulated on the leaf<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a great source of information about bees, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharpeatmanguides.com\/wild-bee-id-guide-new-york\">not all NY bees appear here in Wisconsin<\/a>, and vice versa.
