{"id":10845,"date":"2019-08-07T10:11:31","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T15:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=10845"},"modified":"2024-12-26T15:10:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-26T21:10:05","slug":"once-upon-a-fungus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/once-upon-a-fungus\/","title":{"rendered":"Once upon a Fungus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\">Greetings, BugFans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"default_cursor_cs\">When the BugLady was walking in the woods at Riveredge the other day, she found some plate-sized, stocky, very aromatic, gilled mushrooms growing out of the ground &#8211; possibly one of the (glorious name) Fetid <em>Russula<\/em> group. They were pushing up under last year\u2019s leaf litter; some were partly covered, but some were discernable only as an upward swelling of oak leaves. The cap of the <em>Russula<\/em> is concave, so water and other stuff collects in it. A microclimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/carrion-beetle-american19-8brz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/carrion-beetle-american19-8brz.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/carrion-beetle-american19-8brz-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She saw something moving on the rim of an \u201cover-the-hill\u201d fungus, and she had the good grace to think \u201c<em>what\u2019s a bumblebee doing in a place like this?<\/em>\u201d The AMERICAN CARRION BEETLE is counting on that reaction, and it enhances the illusion by buzzing its wings as it flies. No-one messes with bumblebees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[metaslider id=&#8221;10856&#8243;]&nbsp;<br>Turns out there were a bunch of American Carrion beetles on that and other mushrooms, on the cap, and deep in the flesh and gills (she also photographed a half-dozen on some carnivore scat, but she may not be able to show that shot in polite company).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carrion beetles have a fascinating lifestyle, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/carrion-beetles\/\">chronicled in the early days of BOTW<\/a>. They perform ecosystem services in the form of corpse-removal, but they also feed on rotting fungus and animal droppings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"aligncenter uwm-c-img--center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/indian-pipe19-1rz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/indian-pipe19-1rz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/indian-pipe19-1rz-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/indian-pipe19-1rz-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[Sidebar: <em>Russulas<\/em> can be hard to tell apart; many are considered inedible, but some are mild enough to eat, and some have a spiciness that sneaks up on you (but remember: \u201c<em>There are old mushroom hunters, and there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no old, bold mushroom hunters<\/em>\u201d). They get their nutrients from the roots of trees. Sometimes the mushrooms, which are the fruit of a large, underground system of mycorrhizal strands that connect with plant roots, grow in a straight line above a tree root. Just as the fungi get their food from a tree root, the lovely, parasitic woodland flower Indian pipe (which was blooming in the woods, but not nearby) gets its nutrients from a variety of Russula hosts (for which the Indian pipes are dubbed \u201cmycorrhizal cheaters\u201d). They\u2019re not alone \u2013 beetles, slugs, some rodents and deer eat <em>Russula<\/em> mushrooms.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/carrion-beetle-margined19-1rz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/carrion-beetle-margined19-1rz.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2019\/08\/carrion-beetle-margined19-1rz-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she looked at the mushrooms more closely, the BugLady discovered that there was more going on.
