  {"id":11282,"date":"2020-02-10T12:34:32","date_gmt":"2020-02-10T18:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?page_id=11282"},"modified":"2025-05-19T14:55:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T19:55:43","slug":"field-herpetology-class-course-description","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/field-herpetology-class-course-description\/","title":{"rendered":"Field Herpetology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>May 30 and May 31 (Friday &amp; Saturday)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instructor:<\/strong><br \/><strong>Dr. Josh Kapfer <\/strong>is a Certified Wildlife Biologist \u00ae with The Wildlife Society and a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at UW-Whitewater.\u00a0 He received his Master&#8217;s degree from UW-La Crosse in 2002 and his Ph.D. from UW-Milwaukee in 2007, where he studied the ecology of bull snakes in upper midwestern prairies. Most recently, Josh co-edited and co-authored The Amphibians and Reptiles of Wisconsin, published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Course:<br \/><\/strong>This course will give students a sound background in identifying Wisconsin&#8217;s amphibians and reptiles in both field and laboratory settings.\u00a0 Students will also receive information on the habitat, ecology, conservation, and status of these species within the state.\u00a0 Common techniques for field research in herpetology will be demonstrated, including handling, capturing and surveying techniques.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mandatory Textbook Purchase<br \/><\/strong>Please purchase the three DNR guides to amphibians and reptiles of Wisconsin (a set of all three is $10), which can be purchased here:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/topic\/WildlifeHabitat\/herpbooks.html\">http:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/topic\/WildlifeHabitat\/herpbooks.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Useful materials to bring<\/strong>:<br \/>Field clothing, including sturdy hiking boots and rain gear and a water bottle.\u00a0 Boots for wet and muddy areas are strongly suggested.\u00a0 Insect repellent could be helpful.<\/p>\n<p>Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/12\/HerpetologySyllabus_2025.pdf\">here (pdf)<\/a>for the class syllabus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lodging Accommodations &amp; Food:<br \/><\/strong>The workshop fee does not include overnight accommodations. However, tent camping space on the property is available at no charge. Participants wishing to stay overnight in our Farmhouse may reserve a bed in a shared space at a cost of $20 per night. Bed space is limited so be sure to reserve early. Alternatively, the Saukville Field Station can also provide you with a list of nearby places to stay. An optional catered lunch is provided at cost for an additional charge and will include vegetarian and gluten free options. Meal plan should be ordered at the time your registration is submitted.
