The paintings in this exhibit raise questions about authenticity\, value and the ethical implications of traditional art-historical work. \nDemoted opens in the Mathis Art Gallery\, on the first floor of Mitchell Hall\, on Thursday\, March 13\, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. featuring remarks from undergraduate co-curators at 5:30 p.m. Exhibition runs through May 1. The gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Gallery and events are free.

DESCRIPTION:Hear perspectives from former U.S. Secretaries of Education and authors Arne Duncan and Margaret Spellings during a moderated discussion\, hosted by 51ÁÔĆć at Waukesha and sponsored by the Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership. \nDuncan served as U.S. Secretary of Education from 2009-2016 as part of the Obama Administration. Prior to joining the Obama Administration\, Duncan served as chief executive officer of Chicago Public Schools. From 2001 to 2008\, Duncan won praise for uniting the city’s stakeholders behind an education agenda that included opening 100 new schools; expanding after-school\, summer learning\, early childhood\, and college access programs; dramatically boosting the caliber of teachers; and building public-private partnerships around a variety of education initiatives. He currently leads Chicago CRED\, a nonprofit trying to achieve a transformative reduction in gun violence in Chicago. \nSpellings\, who served as U.S. Secretary of Education from 2005-2009 under George W. Bush\, serves as president and CEO of the Bipartisan Policy Center\, bringing her knowledge and experience developed over an exceptional career in public service at both the state and national level. She most recently served as president and CEO of Texas 2036\, a data-driven\, bipartisan think tank addressing the most pressing issues facing Texans. Spellings also has served as the president of the 17-institution University of North Carolina System\, leading the state’s public university into a new period of performance\, affordability and growth. \nThis event is free but registration is required. Join Outdoor Pursuits as we team up with Wildman Resort\, one of Wisconsin’s professional whitewater rafting outfitters on the Peshtigo River. DESCRIPTION:Explore the surrounding neighborhoods near 51ÁÔĆć in this introduction to longboarding course! We will teach you everything you need to know to be safer and have fun with this new sport. All experience levels are welcome. All equipment is provided (longboard\, helmet\, knee and elbow pads). We will start with an instructional portion at Outdoor Pursuits and then travel to the surrounding neighborhood to try out your new skills. Want to learn more about longboarding? SUMMARY:Backpacking Devil's Lake
DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to learn how to backpack? Outdoor Pursuits is backpacking through Devil’s Lake\, Wisconsin’s most popular state park. No previous backpacking experience is required. All transportation\, equipment\, tent lodging\, meals and instruction are provided. \nFriday: Drive to Devil’s Lake State Park\, Camp at the Group Campground\, explore the East Bluff\nSaturday: Backpack 3.8 miles (6.1 km) from the Group Campsite to the Quartzite Campground\, explore the West Bluff\nSunday: Backpack 5.5 miles (8.9 km) from Quartzite Campground toward Parfrey’s Glen\, explore Parfrey’s Glen\, drive back to 51ÁÔĆć \nThere is an option to place a $50 deposit at checkout – the remainder of the balance must be paid in person before registration closes. Outdoor Pursuits believes in making our trips available and affordable for all 51ÁÔĆć students. SUMMARY:Kayaking Milwaukee River Rapids
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we embark on the flowing Milwaukee River (high from snowmelt) from Lincoln Park south toward North Avenue. We’ll be using sit-on-top kayaks and wetsuits for the paddle. Previous paddling experience is required.
