Mentoring Program Overview for New Students<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

51ÁÔÆæ provides a unique and intensive mentoring experience for a<\/span>ll new <\/span>English Department <\/span>Graduate Teaching Assistants (<\/span>GTAs<\/span>)<\/span> throughout their first year. <\/span>New GTAs <\/span>comprise<\/span> <\/span>an interdisciplinary cohort where they connect<\/span> <\/span>with other teachers<\/span> and are mentored by experienced 51ÁÔÆæ GTAs and the Director of Composition<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentor groups are formed during orientation and meet weekly throughout the fall semester. These meetings<\/span> are intended to be a safe, constructive space for new GTAs to ask questions, work out teaching problems, plan classes, share ideas, and collaborate. Spring mentor groups take a variety of different shapes depending on instructor and curricular needs.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who are the mentors? <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Graduate student mentors are part of the Writing Program Administration<\/span> (WPA)<\/span> <\/span>team and<\/span> work closely with the Director of Composition and the Course Coordinators to support new <\/span>GTAs<\/span> in the composition program. Mentors are graduate students from a variety of <\/span>fields of study<\/span>. They help plan orientation, develop teaching materials and demonstrations, co-teach the required fall course English 700: Teaching Practicum, and serve as mediators for classroom concerns.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentors often participate in the <\/span>Special Em<\/span>phasis <\/span>in Writing Pedagogy and <\/span>Administration<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> take courses in Rhetoric and Composition to broaden their knowledge of current pedagogies.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
