The committees and coordinators that affect graduate students most directly are described below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-executive-and-departmental-committees\">Executive and Departmental Committees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Executive Committee consists of tenured faculty only. It votes on tenure and promotion cases and makes hiring recommendations, among other duties. The departmental committee is larger, including assistant professors and others. It makes decisions regarding curriculum, departmental policies, and programs. The Management Team consists of the Department Chair and the three Associate Chairs (for Graduate Studies, for Undergraduate Studies, and Director of Composition). The team meets regularly to oversee the operations of the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-graduate-policy-committee-gpc\">Graduate Policy Committee (GPC)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This committee is made up of the coordinators of the graduate plans, the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies, the Department Chair, the Director of Composition, one elected faculty member, and two elected graduate student members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Approves admission of graduate students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approves dissertation proposals and preliminary exam proposals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oversight of process for screening and selection of\u00a0teaching assistants\u00a0and graduate school fellowship\u00a0nominees\u00a0by TA\u00a0and Fellowship\u00a0Subcommittee(s) *<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nominates candidates for graduate fellowships (TA and\u00a0Fellowship Subcommittee)\u00a0*\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approves the graduate schedule for each academic year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reviews and approves recommendations for changes in policies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>*TA&nbsp;and Fellowship&nbsp;Selection&nbsp;Subcommittee:&nbsp;Each&nbsp;Plan Advisory Committee&nbsp;serves&nbsp;as&nbsp;the&nbsp;TA&nbsp;and Fellowship&nbsp;Selection Subcommittee&nbsp;for applicants in its plan,&nbsp;to&nbsp;screen&nbsp;and&nbsp;recommend&nbsp;teaching assistantships,&nbsp;as these&nbsp;become available, and&nbsp;to screen and&nbsp;recommend&nbsp;graduate fellowship nominations&nbsp;submitted&nbsp;to the Graduate School&nbsp;for the graduate plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-associate-chair-for-graduate-studies\">Associate Chair for Graduate Studies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Serves as a general advisor for all graduate students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approves the transfer of credits, composition of master\u2019s examination and preliminary examination committees,\u00a0second language certification,\u00a0program of study forms,\u00a0all\u00a0doctoral\u00a0milestones,\u00a0stepping-out forms,\u00a0exam warrants, graduation applications\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assists with graduate student requests for exceptions to Graduate School requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides guidance concerning academic progress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organizes meetings and activities for PhD students relating to the job search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serves as liaison between faculty and graduate students\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reviews\u00a0the graduate schedule\u00a0for\u00a0each\u00a0AY in consultation with\u00a0plan coordinators\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serves as\u00a0Chair of GPC\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-graduate-plan-coordinator\">Graduate Plan Coordinator<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Serves as a student\u2019s initial advisor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identifies transferable credits from other universities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advises students about their progress in the program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chairs the Plan Advisory Committee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-graduate-plan-advisory-committee\">Graduate Plan Advisory Committee<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recommends students for admission to its graduate plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recommends candidates for new TA positions\u00a0and Graduate School fellowships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approves preliminary examination materials for students choosing rationale format option<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oversees matters pertaining to the plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTE: Each graduate plan has an Advisory Committee.&nbsp;All&nbsp;have a graduate student representative on the committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The organization of the department is essentially committee-based.
