Not all students who are admitted will receive an offer with a Teaching Assistantship. For students who do receive a TAship offer with admission:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MA students admitted to the program who are offered a TA ship are typically offered two years of funding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PhD students admitted to the program who are offered a TAship are typically offered five years of funding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benefits\">Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of English offers a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/assistantships\/\">Graduate Teaching Assistantships<\/a> (TAs) each year. These assistantships include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Biweekly stipend&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full tuition remission*&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health insurance eligibility&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* Students are responsible for segregated fees.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on TA benefits, please contact the Graduate Studies Program Associate at <a href=\"mailto:gradeng@uwm.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gradeng@uwm.edu<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-requirements\">Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number of years of assistance the student might receive is counted from the date of enrollment in the program, not from the date that the TAship was awarded.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New students can apply for a TAship by completing the Financial Aid and Teaching Assistantships questionnaire in the Panthera graduate admission application.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching assistantships in coursework are required to take a minimum of two courses per semester for a total of six credits.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New TAs are typically required to take English 700, Teaching Writing Practicum, a 1 credit course, in their first semester.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most first-year TAs have a 2-1 teaching load; that is, new TAs teach two classes in the fall semester and one in the spring semester.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the following years, all TAs teach 2-2. Most TAs begin teaching first-year writing and continue to teach various writing courses throughout their assistantships.
