{"id":27512,"date":"2026-01-09T12:27:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T18:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/?p=27512"},"modified":"2026-01-09T12:27:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T18:27:21","slug":"av-expertise-of-two-faculty-tapped-by-local-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/av-expertise-of-two-faculty-tapped-by-local-media\/","title":{"rendered":"AV expertise of two faculty tapped by local media"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Two faculty members in the college were recently featured in the media, speaking on what a wider use of autonomous, or &#8220;self-driving&#8221; vehicles, in Wisconsin would look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Jan. 8, Xiao Qin, professor, civil &amp; environmental engineering, commented in a story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/proposal-seeks-driverless-self-driving-cars-wisconsin?utm_source=ActiveCampaign&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=First%20data%20center%20products%20nearing%20completion%20at%20Modine%20s%20new%20Franklin%20plant%E2%80%8B&amp;utm_campaign=20260108%20Daily\">Wisconsin Public Radio<\/a> about the relatively safety of AVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State law currently\u00a0doesn&#8217;t allow autonomous vehicles\u00a0that operate without someone in the driver seat. And the story reported on a proposed state bill that would create a permitting process for autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qin, founder of the Safe and Smart Traffic Lab at 51ÁÔÆæ and a member of the Wisconsin Automated Vehicle External Advisory, spoke about the relative safety of AVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milwaukeemag.com\/self-driving-cars-in-wisconsin\/\">Milwaukee Magazine<\/a> quoted Xiaowei Tom Shi, assistant professor, civil &amp; environmental engineering, in its December issue on a related topic &#8212; the remaining issues that researchers are trying solve, what he calls &#8220;the long tail of AVs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two faculty members in the college were recently featured in the media, speaking on what a wider use of autonomous, or &#8220;self-driving&#8221; vehicles, in Wisconsin would look like.
