{"id":25361,"date":"2025-08-25T15:14:30","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T20:14:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/?p=25361"},"modified":"2025-10-22T10:35:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T15:35:17","slug":"mps-high-school-seniors-test-drive-engineering-at-uwm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/mps-high-school-seniors-test-drive-engineering-at-uwm\/","title":{"rendered":"MPS high school seniors test-drive engineering at 51ÁÔÆæ"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When Salman Ibrahim, a senior at Ronald Reagan High School, heard he could take a real college engineering class while still in high school \u2014 and for free \u2014 he didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis way, I can try it out and see if I like it,\u201d he said. \u201cSince it\u2019s free, I don\u2019t have to spend money if I change my mind later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignleft is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube uwm-u-mr-40 wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"51ÁÔÆæ M\u00b3 Program\" width=\"1400\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TG2DJj6xuPc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ibrahim is one of 19 Milwaukee Public Schools seniors spending Fridays this year at 51ÁÔÆæ, earning three credits for taking Introduction to Engineering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opportunity comes through the <a href=\"https:\/\/mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us\/en\/Programs\/Postsecondary-Engagement\/M3.htm\">M3 College Connections Pathways Program<\/a>, a partnership between 51ÁÔÆæ, MPS, and MATC that allows high school students to take college-level classes in fields like nursing, psychology, education, and architecture. This year, engineering joined the list for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-it-works\">How it works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Through College Connections, seniors take English and math courses at MATC for most of the week. On Fridays, they take their chosen elective course. The engineering course, taught by faculty member Madiha Ahmed, gives students an early look at what the field is really like. It\u2019s also a chance to ease into the college environment, said Chris Beimborn, 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s STEM outreach manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis class gives students a chance to explore their interests and get familiar with the college experience,\u201d Beimborn said. \u201cMPS&#8217;s career and college readiness mentors will provide support services.
