{"id":12965,"date":"2022-08-30T11:57:33","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T16:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/?p=12965"},"modified":"2022-09-23T17:29:12","modified_gmt":"2022-09-23T22:29:12","slug":"welcome-shuaiqi-shen-embedded-systems-researcher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/welcome-shuaiqi-shen-embedded-systems-researcher\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome Shuaiqi Shen; Embedded systems researcher"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/537\/2022\/08\/Shen-350W-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/537\/2022\/08\/Shen-350W-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/537\/2022\/08\/Shen-350W-1.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In August, Shuaiqi (Roger) Shen joined 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science as an assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is an embedded systems researcher and his expertise will strengthen the college\u2019s already strong collaborations with local industry in the evolution of the Industrial 4.0 era, says Yi Hu, chair of the Electrical Engineering Department.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Shen will make a significant contribution in revamping the college\u2019s four-course sequence in embedded systems,\u201d Hu says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shen joins a department that is already on the cutting-edge of electronics research (in areas including battery energy storage, cybersecurity, machine learning and AI) and produces graduates who are in high demand by local industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shen\u2019s research will focus on embedded systems\u2014including the power they consume when used within the Internet of Things (IoT)\u2014and energy-efficient artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Embedded systems are small computers that are embedded inside larger mechanical or electric systems, where they perform a dedicated function, typically in real time. They are changing how all of us interact with technology and are increasingly being used in everyday technology associated with communications (cellphones), home electronics (smart home appliances), cars and trucks (keyless entry), healthcare (medical imaging) and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IoT enables AI to be distributed to embedded systems, Shen says. However, the additional energy required for the embedded system\u2019s AI algorithms raise sustainability issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Milwaukee\u2019s manufacturing community offers opportunity to \u201cturn research outcomes into real-world applications\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shen\u2019s research interests include green computing, AI-empowered connected vehicles, edge intelligence, cybersecurity, and next-generation wireless networks. He has published more than 10 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ and the city of Milwaukee, he said, offered him an \u201cideal\u201d place to continue his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c51ÁÔÆæ has first-class scholars in electrical engineering, computer science and industrial engineering,\u201d Shen says. \u201cIt is especially strong in embedded systems and IoT, which are the fields I have been interested in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlus, Milwaukee is home to top manufacturing companies, which could offer the necessary partnerships to turn research outcomes into real-world applications. The avenues for collaboration are plentiful and I\u2019m excited to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eager to teach undergraduates, graduates<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shen enjoys teaching both graduate and undergraduate students and has taught courses related to AI, machine learning, digital systems, embedded systems, programming language, algorithms, cybersecurity, and computer networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am looking forward to helping students realize their potential as members of the creative community in engineering,\u201d he says. \u201cI always feel a sense of accomplishment when students obtain new knowledge and, more importantly, the habit of critical thinking and life-long learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, teachers are not only responsible for conveying knowledge to students, but for conveying the methodology to apply the knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shen comes to 51ÁÔÆæ from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he recently completed his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
