\u201cMath Trajectories for Young Learners\u201d<\/a>\u202fgrew out of 51ÁÔÆæ\u202fand\u202fMPS\u202fgrants and collaborations\u202fon early mathematics\u202flearning through\u202fthe\u202fStrong Start Math Project.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe goal, said Huinker, was to help teachers working\u202fwith\u202f3- to 7-year-olds strengthen their teaching of mathematics by using research-based learning trajectories.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe authors provide a comprehensive and practical guide to early childhood mathematics, blending research, practice and inspiration into a resource that teachers can immediately use.<\/blockquote>National Council of Teachers of Mathematics<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nChildren\u202fare capable of doing\u202fmore with mathematics than merely counting, according to the authors.\u202f\u201cSometimes\u202four\u202fexpectations\u202fare\u202ftoo low,\u201d said Hedges, who earned\u202fher\u202fmaster\u2019s and\u202fdoctorate from the School of Education.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\nLearning trajectories\u202fweave together insights from research and practice. If teachers can recognize developmental steps\u202fand assess where\u202fchildren\u202fare on the trajectory, they can help them\u202fbuild a stronger math foundation,\u202fHuinker and Hedges explained.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trajectories focus on identifying the assets children bring to learning, Hedges said. Teachers can build on those strengths through developmentally appropriate experiences and opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trajectories\u202falign with, but\u202fdon\u2019t\u202freplace state-mandated standards,\u202fHuinker said.\u202fOne of the teachers they worked with explained that the standards tell us where children should be by the end of the year \u2014 the trajectories help teachers understand how to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The book includes 55 video clips of children sharing their mathematical thinking, demonstrating growth along the trajectories. “We believe strongly in listening closely to and learning from children,” Huinker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
