Department Helps Bring Economics to Local High School

Working with the 51ÁÔĆć Office of Dual Enrollment, the Department helps facilitate introductory economics at Shorewood Public High School near our campus. The high school students receive both high school and 51ÁÔĆć credit for the class. Evan Schmidt teaches the class with guest lectures from Professors Matthew McGinty and James Peoples. The high school students attended 51ÁÔĆć in late November to learn more from Professors Kundan Kishor, Rebecca Neumann, Vivian Lei and John Heywood. The hope is that this experience excites the students to pursue economics either at 51ÁÔĆć or elsewhere.

The Niho Excellence Fund Supports Research

The Department benefited greatly from the Niho Research Excellence Fund in 2023-2024. Established and generously funded by Professor Emeritus Yoshio Niho, it promotes Departmental research allowing expenditures and trips that would otherwise be impossible. We deeply thank Yoshio and all who have contributed. Here’s what happened last year:

Scott Adams â€” A former PhD student (and current professor) was able to return to 51ÁÔĆć for a week. We did joint research involving three different manuscripts. This was extremely valuable for my research and for my former student’s success. Many thanks to the Niho Fund!

Itziar Lazkano â€” I presented research, attended seminars and met with leaders in my field at the annual meeting of the United States Association of Energy Economics. The Niho Fund provided this outstanding opportunity to remain active and grow my research.

Matthew McGinty â€” The Niho Fund allowed my co-author to visit so that we could pursue joint research on several papers. While here, he met with 51ÁÔĆć colleagues and shared his own research in a departmental seminar. Such interaction raises our department’s research profile.

James Peoples â€” The Fund allowed me to purchase a new computer which improved my research ability. The enhanced computing power and communication ability will pay dividends in the months ahead.

Kevin Thom â€” The fund generously allowed updating my computer infrastructure so that I can continue the intensive applications needed by my research.

Jangsu Yoon â€” I was able to make several journal submissions, purchase journal subscriptions and pay the conference fee for the Southern Economic Association Conference in DC. A great help!

We would love to have your support of the Yoshio Niho Excellence Fund (#4626) as we work to raise the research profile of the department.

Team Econ does the Panther Prowl

The Panther Prowl was virtual this year but is slated to come back in person next year.  A few members of last year’s Team Econ, nonetheless, got together to do the 5k in person. We’re looking for better participation next year when the real event is back!
