Prof. Sunwoong Kim retires! Sunny joined the Department in 1989 teaching urban economics and mathematical economics. His broad research interests included the importance of spatial aspects of markets, economic development, discrimination, the economics of education and the interaction of politics and economics. His work appeared in the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Urban Economics and the American Economic Review (P&P) among many outlets.

He was a committed advisor and teacher. He enjoyed visiting appointments at universities on three continents and served as a Fulbright Scholar.

He also served as Department Chair, and on many important department, college and university committees. As a retiring Chair, Sunny’s photo was added in the conference room to those of other Chairs who retired before him. He will be greatly missed by all who know him. We wish Sunny a long, fruitful, and enjoyable retirement!

Continuing to work with the Office of Dual Enrollment, the Department hosted students from two local high schools late in the fall term. Evan Schmidt from Shorewood High School brought 28 students from his Econ 100 class. Joseph Torrisi (BA 2019) from Grafton High School brought 16 students taking AP Economics. Professors Kundan Kishor, Vivian Lei and Rebecca Neumann discussed career opportunities in economics and provided an overview of economics at 51.

Then current 51 Econ students answered questions and interacted with the high school students in smaller groups. The 51 students were Steven English, Mia Crowell, Raveeha Arif, Erin Huerta, Charlotte Sackerson, and Zainab Musa.

The high school students next sat in on a microeconomics principles class and finished up the day with lunch in the union.
The 51 Center for International Education named Prof. Itziar Lazkano an International Advocate. As an Advocate she “significantly impacted and improved the lives of 51 international students and study abroad participants.” This recognition follows from students nominating faculty who showed them exceptional support and assistance.

After seeing the photo of former Professor Keith Bender showing off his 51 Econ pride in Scotland, folks this side were not to be left out. Current PhD student Zo Andriantomanga and alum Faniry Andriamialisoa (MA 2021) show off their great 51 Economics hats. Send us your photo – we would love to see your pride!
