Following the untimely death several decades ago of one of our graduate students, Gregory Chow, a fund was established to buy books for the Golda Meir Library in his memory.  Each donated book has the following book plate.

This fund is winding down but here is the list of books purchased last year, 2022, from the Fund:

The economics of sovereign debt and default / Mark Aguiar & Manuel Amador. (Princeton : Princeton University Press, 2021.)

Career & family: Women’s century-long journey toward equity / Claudia Goldin. (Princeton : Princeton University Press, 2021.

A monetary and fiscal history of the United States, 1961-2021 / Alan S. Blinder. (Princeton, New Jersey : Princeton University Press, 2022.)

Brenda Cullin retired earlier this year after 42 years of outstanding service. Since 2011 she served as the office manager of the Department.  She brought a steady presence, substantial skills, and a loving heart. She made us a better and more caring “family.”

Last week we finally had the opportunity to throw her the party she deserved.  The Chancellor, Provost, faculty, students, alums, coworkers and friends from the Department and across the campus came to say thank you and show respect.  Kundan Kishor, Chair, read a special resolution you can read here.  There was great food and fellowship.  Brenda herself had a few words to say (are you surprised?) and it was wonderful event.  Brenda will be missed!

Salome Giorgadze wins the William L. Holahan Prize for Outstanding Teaching Assistant. Congratulations!

This is the tenth year of the Prize. Established to commemorate Bill’s 40 years of service to the 51ÁÔÆæ economics department, the Prize now provides over $1200 to the winner. We are delighted to present the Prize to Salome, a graduate of Colby College originally from Kazakhstan, who receives rave reviews on her student evaluations. Well done!

We encourage contributions to the William Holahan Fund to support and enlarge this recognition of our outstanding teaching assistants and in continuing recognition of Bill.

The Niho Fund Supports Department Research /economics/the-niho-fund-supports-department-research/ Tue, 30 Nov 2021 19:02:09 +0000 /economics/?p=3908 The Department continues to benefit from the Niho Faculty Excellence Fund.

The Department continues to greatly benefit from the Niho Research Excellence Fund.  Established by Professor Emeritus Yoshio Niho, and supported by many friends and alums, it promotes Departmental research. Again this year, Covid-19 disrupted many conferences and planned research trips but the support was still greatly appreciated!  A heartfelt thanks to Yoshio and the many contributors to the Fund!

Kevin Thom – This year I obtained tenure and the Niho Fund continued to be a big support.  Together with grant funds I used the allocation to purchase the type of high-powered computer necessary for the increasing computational complexity of my research.

Jangsu Yoon – The Niho Fund allowed me to employ a research assistant over the summer.  This allowed me to explore new research: “Promotion in the Executive Labor Market.”  The RA did a great job arranging and merging complicated datasets allowing me to make more progress than I would alone.  The Fund is a great resource for junior faculty like me!

Itziar Lazkano – My workhorse computer needed replacing. The Niho Fund together with Departmental funds came through to provide what was needed.  I am now set for several years and thank the Fund!

Matt McGinty – Submitting to major economics journals is increasingly expensive.  The Niho Fund covered my submission fees to several leading journals this year.  This allowed me not to worry about the price and to orient my research to the professional outlets in which it belongs.

Scott Drewianka – The Niho Fund kept me in the research game this year.  I updated my econometric software allowing me access to new routines needed for my work.  I replaced my old and failing desktop at the office.  I renewed a membership in an economics research association in which I regularly participate.  A great infusion at just the right time.
