{"id":38,"date":"2017-02-14T09:38:45","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T15:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/economic-development\/?page_id=38"},"modified":"2026-02-26T13:09:58","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T19:09:58","slug":"fellows","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/economic-development\/fellows\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic Development Fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"uwm-u-pb-80 uwm-u-pt-0\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-economic-development-fellows-program\">What is the Economic Development Fellows Program?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lead-in\">The Economic Development Fellows Program (ED) is a two-year fellowship opportunity that combines work in a government agency or community-based organization with graduate level study at the University of Wisconsin\u2013Milwaukee. Individuals with an interest in economic development issues will find this program to be valuable in both practical and theoretical training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ED Fellows Program is an initiative of the 51ÁÔÆæ Center for Economic Development (CED). One objective of CED is to assist local government agencies and nonprofit organizations in achieving their economic development goals. Fellows are assigned to a participating agency or organization where they work side-by-side with agency leaders and staff, gaining valuable economic development experience. To date, 30 individuals have been recipients of ED fellowships. Each year two to three new ED Fellows are selected in a competitive process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During their fellowships, the students pursue studies in economic development-related fields while providing local organizations with much needed assistance. Fellows have worked on issues such as reindustrializing the Menomonee Valley on the southside of Milwaukee, reviving declining neighborhood commercial strips, improving neighborhood services (including housing), running a summer youth internship program, and building a comprehensive business assistance program in one of Milwaukee\u2019s most distressed inner-city neighborhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizations where Economic Development Fellows have been placed include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwbic.com\/\">Wisconsin Women\u2019s Business Initiative Corporation<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/city.milwaukee.gov\/DCD#.W-ru8LFKiUk\">Department of City Development<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commonbond.org\">Common Bond<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uedawi.org\/\">The Urban Economic Development Association<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sschc.org\/\">The Sixteenth Street Community Health Center<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevalleymke.org\/\">The Menomonee Valley Partners, Inc.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/urbanecologycenter.org\/\">The Urban Ecology Center<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hacm.org\/\">The City of Milwaukee Housing Authority<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/city.milwaukee.gov\/EarnandLearn\">Mayor\u2019s Summer Youth Internship Program<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"uwm-bg-gray uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading heading-separator uwm-u-text--center default\" id=\"h-fellows-accomplishments\">Fellows Accomplishments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center lead-in\">A sampling of Fellows&#8217; accomplishments includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row uwm-l-row--4\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>helped 66 small business owners raise $375,500.00 in capital to start and expand their businesses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drafting the successful application for \u201cMain Street\u201d designation for National Avenue;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>established Mayor\u2019s Youth Internship Program (now called Earn and Learn), placing hundreds of Milwaukee youth in paid summer internships in city agencies and non-profits;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>coordinated economic development for the Lincoln Avenue Revitalization District, completed fa\u00e7ade renovation, and street beautification projects;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>established a public computer lab in a low-income neighborhood;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>created and maintained an information clearinghouse on sustainability indicators for Milwaukee\u2019s Menomonee Valley;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>provided key assistance in the development of the Harambee Great Neighborhood Plan which resulted in the award of a $1.7 million community development grant from Thrivent Financial;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>carried out Utility Allowance Study of 400 public housing scattered sites, which led to recalculation of monthly utility allowances for public housing residents;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developed mural project depicting history and culture of an inner-city neighborhood;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developed policy approaches for career development programming for youth as part of the to the City of Milwaukee\u2019s Economic Development Policy Plan;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>created demographic profile and reviewed best practices for land use and workforce development for the 30th Street Industrial Corridor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading heading-separator default\" id=\"h-how-to-apply\">How to Apply?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row uwm-l-row--4\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-one\">Step One<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apply for admission to one of the graduate programs included in the ED Program.
