Unfortunately, existing anxiety medications suffer from delayed or inadequate efficacy and sedative-hypnotic effects.&nbsp; Development of additional anxiolytics with different mechanisms of action could improve therapeutic outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/drug-discovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/390\/2024\/09\/SCP-2-reserach-team.jpg\" alt=\"Group photo outdoors of Chris Cunningham, Cecilia Hillard, and Elizabeth Liedhegner\" class=\"wp-image-1144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/drug-discovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/390\/2024\/09\/SCP-2-reserach-team.jpg 320w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/drug-discovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/390\/2024\/09\/SCP-2-reserach-team-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/cunninghamlab.wordpress.com\">Chris Cunningham<\/a> (Concordia University Wisconsin), <a href=\"http:\/\/mcw.edu\/departments\/pharmacology-and-toxicology\/people\/cecilia-hillard-phd\">Cecilia Hillard<\/a> (Medical College of Wisconsin), and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biomedical-sciences-healthcare-administration\/directory\/liedhegner-elizabeth\/\">Elizabeth Liedhegner<\/a> (University of Wisconsin Milwaukee) have identified <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28750817\/\">Sterol Carrier Protein 2<\/a> (SCP-2), a non-specific lipid trafficking protein, as a novel therapeutic target for anxiety.&nbsp; In mice, inhibition or loss of SCP-2 leads to reduced anxiety-like behaviors and enhanced fear extinction via indirect activation of the endocannabinoid system.&nbsp; The team has been recently awarded an <a href=\"http:\/\/reporter.nih.gov\/search\/XYFmoCd0UUu2vycYAl0bLw\/project-details\/10998194\">R01 by the National Institute of Mental Health<\/a> to develop and evaluate inhibitors of SCP-2 as a novel class of anxiolytic therapy.&nbsp; The MIDD will support these studies through preclinical pharmacokinetic characterization of successful inhibitors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 1\/3 of Americans will experience an anxiety disorder in their lifetime resulting in impaired social function and reduction of quality of life.
