Your child may give permission for a third party (you) to access his\/her records, including dining plan information, by filling out a <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/registrar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/671\/2025\/05\/FERPA_WITHHOLD_RELEASE_INFORMATION_FORM.pdf\">FERPA Student Consent Form<\/a>, or by providing PAWS access by <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/registrar\/student-record\/sharing-protecting-your-information\/#h-granting-access-to-private-records\">establishing a Designate Account<\/a>. Two are Residential Dining Caf\u00e9s, with one being located in Sandburg Hall and the other in Cambridge Commons. Our third cafeteria is in the Atrium of the 51ÁÔÆæ Student Union, and houses many of our Retail Dining food outlets.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">If I am a University Housing Student, can I eat in either of the Residential Dining Halls?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Yes! Regardless of which residence hall you occupy, if you are a residential student, you have access to both the Sandburg Hall and Cambridge Commons&#8217; Residential Dining Caf\u00e9s. This also applies to students living in RiverView Hall, which does not have its own Residential Dining Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Why is RiverView Hall\u2019s cafeteria closed? Where do I eat if I live in RiverView?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>RiverView Hall does not have the infrastructure to support an operating\/cooking food service space. This means that foods are not cooked on-site at RiverView, like they are at Sandburg Caf\u00e9 and Cambridge Caf\u00e9. While 51ÁÔÆæ has attempted several models and versions of service at RiverView, each one has increased the overall meal plan expense (for all residential diners in all Residence Halls) and received a grossly disproportionate volume of food-quality and facility complaints when open. To best serve the 51ÁÔÆæ residential population, 51ÁÔÆæ Dining has chosen to concentrate resources into the two on-site prep\/service kitchen facilities. This choice allows 51ÁÔÆæ Dining to manage cost challenges while focusing on customer service, food quality, and improving food variety and menu standards.<br><br>All University Housing Students have the option of dining at either Sandburg Caf\u00e9 or Cambridge Caf\u00e9, including RiverView residents. While Sandburg and Cambridge both have \u201cin-house\u201d caf\u00e9 facilities, this is uncommon at most major universities. Most often, dining halls and residence halls are in separate buildings, requiring students to walk. However, 51ÁÔÆæ Dining acknowledges that Sandburg and Cambridge residents have the privilege of having operational Caf\u00e9s attached to their residence halls, while RiverView residents do not. Therefore, we offer RiverView residents the option of a reduced dining plan, the &#8220;Supplemental&#8221; Plan, so that they can still partake in a dining plan, while having more flexibility to shop for their own groceries and cook their own meals at their convenience. We also have shuttle buses running regularly throughout the day to facilitate the commute between dining facilities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">If I am a 51ÁÔÆæ student living in Kenilworth Square Apartments, can I partake in a Residential Dining Plan?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>No. Residential Dining Plans are only for students living in one of our three Residence Halls: Cambridge Commons, Sandburg Hall, or RiverView Hall. Students living in Kenilworth Square Apartments have a lease agreement rather than a University Housing Contract, and are thereby ineligible for a Residential Dining Plan. If this sticker is missing or illegible, please <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/dining\/contact\/\">Contact us<\/a> and let us know the location of the vending machine, as well as a summary of the issue, so that we can investigate the matter.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Are vending machines available after scheduled dining hours?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Yes! Vending machines are accessible so long as the buildings they are housed in are open, so there is almost always a way to get a snack, even after the residential dining halls and retail dining locations are closed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Can I use a reusable\/refillable cup at soda stations or Grind locations?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ Dining &amp; Retail Services appreciates and admires that our student diners are advocates for environmentally friendly alternatives for our disposable drinkware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we all know, the pandemic had a huge impact on how businesses operate, which led to big changes in both staffing and operationally here at 51ÁÔÆæ. Due to this, 51ÁÔÆæ Dining decided to discontinue certain services, such as allowing refills on reusable cups at the Grind. This decision was made to avoid cross-contamination, sanitation issues, as well as concerns with personal cups used in conjunction with the sanitized equipment the staff work with on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do offer a discount for refills on the self-serve coffee at the Flour Shop that is located in the 51ÁÔÆæ Student Union. You can bring your own cup (up to 16oz) and refill your cup for a discount. This offers students the possibility of using their own personal cup to refill before class or when they are on their way to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We understand that this may be frustrating due to other local coffee shops offering this service. 51ÁÔÆæ Dining has tried to implement this service and, with all factors considered, it was unfeasibly and counterproductive for both our staff and operations. Students using their own personal funds can pay with cash or debit\/credit cards at the registers. If a student is using their Dining Dollars, they can either scan the code on their 51ÁÔÆæ GET Mobile App or swipe their Panther Card ID at the register. One swipe of a residential student\u2019s Panther Card ID allows for entry into a Residential Dining Caf\u00e9. Students can then take as much or a little food as they like with each swipe. Meal swipes can be used as desired by students throughout the semester, at any time the Residential Dining Caf\u00e9s are open.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">How do I budget my meal swipes?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Checking your meal swipe balance regularly is important for budgeting your swipes.&nbsp;You can check your meal swipe balance at the register every time you swipe. If you need an update outside of a meal purchase, you can contact the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/mysb31\/qdjhqpxn\/ekwipcg\">Panther Card Office<\/a>&nbsp;to confirm your current balance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students&nbsp;on the \u201c225\u201d or \u201cSupplemental\u201d plans should&nbsp;practice&nbsp;good semester-long swipe management habits.&nbsp;Any time you do not&nbsp;use&nbsp;a meal&nbsp;swipe, you are able to \u201cbank\u201d that&nbsp;swipe&nbsp;for later&nbsp;use.&nbsp;For instance,&nbsp;if&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;planning a&nbsp;camping&nbsp;trip&nbsp;with your&nbsp;friends, visiting&nbsp;someone&nbsp;at another campus,&nbsp;attending&nbsp;a&nbsp;conference with a student organization, or are going home for the weekend,&nbsp;these choices&nbsp;all&nbsp;<a><\/a>factor&nbsp;into&nbsp;how you budget your swipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How you budget your meal swipes&nbsp;ultimately depends&nbsp;on what meal plan you have, as well as what a typical week looks like for&nbsp;you. If you still find that you are running low on swipes, you may need to consider adjusting your swipe habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have the \u201c4-a-Day&#8221; plan, you have enough swipes to use for each mealtime every day the Caf\u00e9s are open. Anytime Dining has been a challenge for many, on both sides of the Caf\u00e9 service counter. Not only have students felt the food has not been satisfactory, but the \u201canytime, anywhere, as much as you want\u201d concept has proven wasteful and has diminished the variety and quality of food. Unfortunately, the intent to provide greater food availability throughout the whole school year for all our residential students has become operationally and financially unsustainable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new 2025\/2026 meal plan model is one step to reduce food waste and direct resources to improve food variety and quality. We are continuing to honor 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s commitment to student access anytime we are open and providing as much food as students desire at any meal. At the same time, this plan will implement structures that reduce waste significantly and provide control over costs. This, with several accountability and efficiency measures being implemented behind the scenes, will result in higher quality products with increased options and availability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please know that 51ÁÔÆæ Dining &amp; Retail Services has not been waiting until the new meal plan is in effect to make improvements. Changes have been made throughout 51ÁÔÆæ Dining &amp; Retail Services, and the Spring 2025 Residential Menus are an excellent example of that. We understand some of the new changes, such as requiring all residential housing students to participate in a dining plan, can affect choices of where to live. It may be due to menu scheduling delays in replenishing a popular item on the service line, or the consequence of industry-wide supply chain issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Menu Scheduling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our primary entr\u00e9e stations, the menu changes throughout the day, sometimes shifting as many as three separate times. While our staff works to minimize the downtime on any line, it is essential that we clean and refresh these stations during transition. It is entirely possible for a student diner to come at one of these times. While we do a great deal of preparation in advance, there are times when the popularity of an item takes us by surprise, and more product is needed before the final cooking steps are completed.
