{"id":965,"date":"2020-01-30T10:32:14","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T16:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/digital-arts-culture\/?p=965"},"modified":"2020-02-04T09:13:41","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T15:13:41","slug":"reginald-baylor-and-manufacturing-creativity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/digital-arts-culture\/reginald-baylor-and-manufacturing-creativity\/","title":{"rendered":"Reginald Baylor and &#8220;Manufacturing Creativity&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>-By Hailee Jeske<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-965 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href="https:\/\/uwm.edu\/digital-arts-culture\/reginald-baylor-and-manufacturing-creativity\/baylor1\/"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/digital-arts-culture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/342\/2020\/01\/Baylor1-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Thursday, January 23, 2020, I had the opportunity to listen to Reginald Baylor and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Melissa Courtney talk about the Reginald Baylor Studio and everything that it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">embodies.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The day prior,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I visited\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exhibit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u201cManufacturing Creativity&#8221; at the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/studentinvolvement\/arts-and-entertainment\/union-art-gallery\/exhibitions\/\">Union Art Gallery<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with Kelly, a longtime friend<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of mine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">G<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oing into the exhibit, we thought that it would be a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collection<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">traditional<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aintings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Surprisingly, the exhibit wasn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0anything we had expected<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at all. Instead, it was a collection of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0t-shirts, shower curtains,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collages, and solo prints, with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0some<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0similarities to Andy Warhol and Takashi Murakami.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The pieces of work ranged from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an average-sized print to a large collage that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">towered from floor to ceiling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kelly and I were fascinated with the work, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0she decided to attend the artist talk with me on Thursday.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-967\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/digital-arts-culture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/342\/2020\/01\/Baylor2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Almost immediately into<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hearing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Baylor and Courtney talk about the Reginald Baylor Studio,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the entire exhibit\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">started to make sense to me.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This was m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ore than just art. It was about creating a movement, as Courtney suggested.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Baylor touched on how difficult it <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to be an artist producing fine art paintings, and how the idea of \u201cwhy make one<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0painting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0when I can make more with manufacturing and well-run machines<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d led to the creation of the Reginald Baylor Studio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Baylor and Courtney compared what they do at the Reginald Baylor Studio to a sports game. Each sports game<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is extremely theatrical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d it\u2019s n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ot about whether the team wins or loses, it\u2019s about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the performance.
