Thursday, March 12 – Sunday, March 22<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n EVENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n ————-<\/p>\n\n\n\n THURSDAY, MARCH 12<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jessica Kirzane: Collaborative Digital Open Access Publishing and Community Building: In Geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n 3 pm – 4:30 pm, DH Lab, 2nd Floor Golda Meir Library, East Wing<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies<\/em> was founded six years ago by a group of then-graduate students to be a central location for the field of Yiddish Studies. It is a free, open-access digital platform without academic affiliation, with a mission to extend the boundaries of the field while fostering community within the field. The journal publishes not only peer reviewed articles but also literary translations, pedagogical resources, and a culture-oriented blog. In Geveb\u2019s <\/em>Editor-in-chief Jessica Kirzane will discuss how the flexibility of the journal\u2019s born-digital platform and its independent funding model open up new arenas for scholarly publishing and collaboration. Her talk will focus especially on the pedagogy section of the journal, which reorients the field of Yiddish studies toward the kind of work many of its practitioners perform day in and day out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jessica Kirzane Book Launch: “Diary of a Lonely Girl: or The Battle against Free Love”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n 7 pm – 9 pm, 51ÁÔÆæ Greene Museum<\/p>\n\n\n\n First serialized in the Yiddish press in 1916\u201318, \u201cDiary of a Lonely Girl\u201d is a novel of intimate feelings and scandalous behaviors, suffused with dark humor. Squeezed between men who use their freethinking ideals to pressure her to be sexually available and nosy landladies who require her to maintain her respectability, the narrator wryly expresses frustration at her vulnerable circumstances. The novel boldly explores issues of consent, body autonomy, and women\u2019s empowerment and disempowerment around sexuality, courtship, and politics. Jessica Kirzane is an assistant instructional professor in Yiddish at the University of Chicago and editor-in-chief of \u201cIn Geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies.\u201d She was a 2017 translation fellow and a 2018 pedagogy fellow at the Yiddish Book Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FRIDAY, MARCH 13<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Graduate Student Bagel Hour <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n 10 am – 11 am, Curtin 939<\/p>\n\n\n\n All graduate students are invited to join us in the C21 office (Curtin 939) for this biweekly celebration of carbs and camaraderie. Start your Friday with some free coffee and bagels (now provided by Birch & Butcher), and meet and chat with other grad students from across campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MONDAY, MARCH 16<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Application Due: Business Model Canvas Pitch Competition and the Wisconsin Big Idea Tournament<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Current 51ÁÔÆæ students can compete in the Business Model Canvas Pitch Competition on March 27th at the 51ÁÔÆæ Lubar Entrepreneurship Center. The winning team from this competition will move on to the Wisconsin Big Idea Tournament (WBIT), a statewide competition open to students attending any two- or four-year University of Wisconsin (with the exception of UW-Madison). The winner of the WBIT will win cash prizes, and an opportunity to win up to $25,000 through Ideavace, and will be representing Wisconsin at the International Business Model Competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
