{"id":587,"date":"2025-05-21T15:24:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T20:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/?page_id=587"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:47:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T16:47:45","slug":"supporting-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/student-support-team\/supporting-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-support-students\">How to Support Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reach-out-amp-listen\"><strong>Reach Out &amp; Listen<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Email or talk to the student in a confidential setting, if possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Express concern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engage in conversation and genuinely listen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acknowledge the student\u2019s situation and avoid judgment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflect back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask questions to assess where they are at:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you have a plan to resolve the situation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What have you thought about doing?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What resources do you have?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you have a support system? Have you thought about reaching out to them?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have you thought about harming yourself or someone else?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are you suicidal? Do you have a plan?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-support-amp-assist-the-student\"><strong>Support &amp; Assist the Student<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Express a desire to help. Ask how you can be of help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop a plan with the student on the next steps they can take.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help the student set reasonable limits and expectations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set clear boundaries regarding the level of help you can offer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help the student identify other sources of help.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Ask if you can call or email the unit on their behalf. Copy the student in the email if appropriate<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If appropriate, discuss ways you can follow up to see how they are doing later on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong>: Do not promise confidentiality. Threats to self and others, sexual assault, and abuse must be reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-submit-a-referral\">Submit a Referral<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Complete a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?UnivofWisconsinMilwaukee&amp;layout_id=5\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Student Support Request\/Referral<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>form as soon as possible.&nbsp;When we receive referrals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We try respect the trust\/rapport you\u2019ve built with the student.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When possible, we will first consult with the reporter and gather information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We seek to address concerns at the lowest level that is appropriate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We strive to respond to reports within in two (2) business days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to Support Students Reach Out &amp; Listen Support &amp; Assist the Student Important: Do not promise confidentiality.
