{"id":1239,"date":"2026-04-12T12:17:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T17:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/?page_id=1239"},"modified":"2026-04-15T12:40:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T17:40:39","slug":"academic-misconduct-procedures","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/academic-misconduct-procedures\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Misconduct Flowchart"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Guiding Documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14\/\">UWS Chapter 14<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/policy\/library\/student-academic-misconduct-procedures\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/policy\/library\/student-academic-misconduct-procedures\/\"><strong>51ÁÔÆæ Faculty Document 1686<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-first-step\">First Step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If an Instructor suspects academic misconduct they should confer with the <a href=\"dos@uwm.edu\" type=\"link\" id=\"dos@uwm.edu\">Dean of Students Office<\/a> (DOSO) and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/conduct\/academic-misconduct\/investigating-officers-for-academic-misconduct\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/conduct\/academic-misconduct\/investigating-officers-for-academic-misconduct\/\">Investigating Officer<\/a> (IO) of the school\/college in which the student is enrolled. After doing so, the instructor of record must offer the student a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/05\/AM-Conference-Invite-Emai-Template.docx\">conference (DOCX)<\/a>\u00a0to discuss the allegations of academic misconduct. Students do not have to come to the conference, but must receive the offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-second-step\">Second Step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the conference has occured, or the deadline to schedule the conference has passed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The instructor determines Academic Misconduct has NOT occured:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>End of process. Inform DOSO and IO that the case will not be moving forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The instructor determines Academic Misconduct HAS occured:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instructor (with advice of DOSO and IO) considers appropriate sanction. All allegations of Academic Misconduct must be documented with DOSO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-appropriate-sanctions\">Appropriate Sanctions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Group &#8220;A&#8221; Sanctions<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/document\/administrativecode\/UWS%2014.05\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/document\/administrativecode\/UWS%2014.05\">(UWS 14.05)<\/a> Disciplinary sanction imposed at the discretion of the instructor\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An oral reprimand;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A written reprimand presented only to the student; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An assignment to repeat the work, to be graded on its merits.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Group &#8220;B&#8221; Sanctions<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14\/06\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/code\/admin_code\/uws\/14\/06\">(UWS 14.06)<\/a> Disciplinary sanction imposed following a report of academic misconduct by the instructor.\n<ol start=\"4\" style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A lower or failing grade on the particular assignment or test;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lower grade in the course;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A failing grade in the course;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Removal of the student from the course in progress;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A written reprimand to be included in the student\u2019s disciplinary file.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Group &#8220;C&#8221; Sanctions<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/document\/administrativecode\/UWS%2014.07\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/document\/administrativecode\/UWS%2014.07\">(UWS 14.07)<\/a> Disciplinary sanction imposed following a report of academic misconduct by the investigating officer.\n<ol start=\"10\" style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disciplinary probation; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suspension or expulsion from the university.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-third-step\">Third Step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>If Group &#8220;A&#8221; Sanction Imposed<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sanction imposed by instructor. Email documetation is sent to student, DOSO and IO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If Group &#8220;B&#8221; Sanction Imposed<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instructor prepares <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/11\/Nov-Academic-Misconduct-Letter-Templat.docx\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/11\/Nov-Academic-Misconduct-Letter-Templat.docx\">letter<\/a> describing misconduct, naming sanctions, and notifying student of right to a hearing, with copy of procedures. Report sent to student, DOSO and IO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If Group &#8220;C&#8221; Sanction Imposed<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instructor prepares <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/11\/Nov-Academic-Misconduct-Letter-Templat.docx\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/11\/Nov-Academic-Misconduct-Letter-Templat.docx\">letter<\/a> describing misconduct and proposing sanctions. Report sent to Investigating Officer (IO), who conducts an investigation and makes determination. Per UWS <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/document\/administrativecode\/UWS%2014.07\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/document\/administrativecode\/UWS%2014.07\">14.07<\/a>, IO may recommend sanctions other than those recommended by instructor.&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No Academic Misconduct<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>End of Process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Academic Misconduct<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>IO prepares <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/11\/Nov-Academic-Misconduct-Letter-Templat.docx\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/deanofstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/707\/2025\/11\/Nov-Academic-Misconduct-Letter-Templat.docx\">letter<\/a> describing the misconduct, recommending sanctions, and notifying student of right to a hearing. Report sent to student\u2019s instructor and DOSO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hearing\">Hearing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hearing conducted only if student requests within 10 days of reccommendation of Group A Sanction or Group B Sanctions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No Hearing Request<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sanction Imposed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>End of Process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Request for a Hearing<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DOSO will proceed to schedule a hearing as set forth by <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/document\/administrativecode\/UWS%2014.08\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/document\/administrativecode\/UWS%2014.08\">UWS 14.08<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If Group C is recommened a Academic Misconduct Hearing is automatically scheduled by DOSO, unless waived by the student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Student waives their rights to a hearing<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sanction Imposed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>End of Process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hearing Not Waived<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proceed to hearing as scheduled by DOSO<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hearing-scheduled\">Hearing Scheduled<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Decision sent to student.
