The recent documentary, I Am Not Your Negro<\/em>, by Raul Peck has led to a surge of interest in James Baldwin\u2019s life and legacy. Beyond the image presented in the film Baldwin\u2019s writing voice was challenging as was his vision for America. This workshop, led by Johari Jabir of the University of Illinois-Chicago, will engage two of Baldwin\u2019s texts: his short story, Sonny<\/em>\u2019s Blues<\/em> and his classic essay, The Fire Next Time<\/em>. We will perform close readings of these texts in order to explore why and how Baldwin\u2019s work speaks to us today.<\/p>\n
