I am a flash fiction writer, which means I write flash fiction. When I say this to people, they usually ask me what flash fiction is and I oblige them with an explanation.\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0very short fiction.\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0like a paragraph or a page. A flash. They nod in ackno<\/span>wledgement. Oh, they say. Oh, right.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0the qualifier, of course. The\u00a0<\/span>flash\u00a0<\/span><\/i>bit. Why specify?\u00a0<\/span>And<\/span>\u00a0I don\u2019t always\u2014most of the time, I just say I write fiction; I\u2019m a fiction writer; I\u2019m a fiction writer of works of a certain length.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So the\u00a0<\/span>flash\u00a0<\/span><\/i>bit i<\/span>s a\u00a0<\/span>justification?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Or<\/span>\u00a0a badge of honor?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I decided to hit up Twitter, asking in my tweet to finish the sentence: \u201cFlash is not\u2026\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0know why I flipped the question to a negative; why ask what something is not?\u00a0<\/span>But<\/span>\u00a0it seemed appropriate since flash\u00a0<\/span>fiction thrives in negative space.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
