{"id":7449,"date":"2023-11-02T15:51:17","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T20:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/webid2-test-lsweb\/?page_id=7449"},"modified":"2024-06-26T09:04:54","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T14:04:54","slug":"how-to-apply-to-the-phd-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/communication\/students\/graduate\/phd-program\/how-to-apply-to-the-phd-program\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Apply to the PhD Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a0\">Admission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An applicant must meet&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/admission\/\">Graduate School Requirements<\/a>, hold a master\u2019s degree in communication or a related field, and meet these departmental requirements to be considered for admission to the program in regular status:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.33 (B+) in coursework for the master\u2019s degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit letters of recommendation from at least three (3) communication professionals attesting to the student\u2019s capability to perform satisfactorily at the doctoral level (academic references preferred).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit a writing sample that demonstrates the applicant\u2019s analytical and critical thinking skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants lacking the requisite GPA, and those without the Master of Arts\/Science in Communication (or an equivalent degree) may be considered for admission on probation, and may be required to complete preparatory coursework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Department of Communication\u2019s Doctoral program only admits once a year for the Fall semester. We recommend that you submit all materials to have a completed file by December 1st.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All application materials for the PhD program<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/graduateschool-apply.uwm.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10019\">need to be uploaded here.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reapplication\/Readmission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who receive the MA in Communication from 51ÁÔÆæ must reapply to be considered for admission to the PhD program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Residence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The student must meet minimum&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/doctoral-requirements\/#residence\">Graduate School Residence Requirements<\/a>&nbsp;of one continuous academic year of full-time graduate studies at 51ÁÔÆæ. This can be satisfied by completing at least 8 graduate credits in each of two consecutive semesters, or 6 or more graduate credits in each of three consecutive semesters, including summer sessions.
