Congratulations to Dr. Leslie J. Harris, the recipient of this year’s Marie Hochmuth Nichols Award, which “recognizes individuals who have made significant scholarly contributions to the study of public address.” This highly prestigious award honors Dr. Harris for her most recent book, “The Rhetoric of White Slavery and the Making of National Identity,” which will be celebrated at this year’s Public Address Division business meeting at the National Communication Association convention, November 21-24, 2024, in New Orleans.

Dr. Leslie Harris gave a lecture at UW-Waukesha on April 17, 2024 entitled, “Disrupting the arrow of time: Gun violence in southeastern Wisconsin.” By analyzing stories shared through the public humanities project, Voices of Gun Violence, she explored how gun violence interrupts the arrow of time, not only disrupting the future but also shifting perceptions of the past. She concluded with implications for understanding and responding to gun violence in the United States.
