With the conclusion of the 2017-2018 academic year, the 51ÁÔÆæ Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies is proud to announce this year’s student award winners. \u00a0CLACS awarded over $54,000<\/strong> in Student Scholarships, Fellowships, and Grants to support sixteen undergraduate and graduate students<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\u00a0Undergraduate Donald R. Shea Scholarship<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0may be used for 51ÁÔÆæ sponsored semester-long or short-term study abroad in the Latin American\/Caribbean region, and for other academic opportunities in the region that can be accepted for 51ÁÔÆæ credit.<\/p>\n

2017-2018 Recipient<\/u><\/p>\n

Jamie Czerwinski<\/strong>, BA, World Language Education-Spanish & ESL Certificate (Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, Fall Study Abroad)<\/p>\n

Travel Grants<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0are offered to\u00a051ÁÔÆæ graduate\u00a0or advanced undergraduate students who\u00a0have a research proposal or paper presentation that focuses on the Latin American\/Caribbean region.<\/p>\n

Dalila Negreiros<\/strong>, PhD, Africology (49th Annual National Conference of Black Political Scientists, Presentation<\/p>\n

The Undergraduate and Graduate Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0through funding from the U.S. Department of Education,\u00a0are available for select undergraduate students for academic year\u00a0study of intermediate or higher level Portuguese language in combination with area studies courses, and for graduate students for summer intensive Portuguese,\u00a0Haitian\u00a0Creole, or\u00a0indigenous languages of Latin America.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Tinker Field Research Award<\/u><\/strong>,\u00a0in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\u2019s Office of Sponsored Research and Graduate School, supports\u00a0pre-dissertation graduate student field research in Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Funding is provided by the\u00a0Tinker Foundation and 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Office of Sponsored Research and Graduate School.<\/p>\n

It is named after\u00a0Professor Emerita\u00a0Dr. Kristin Ruggiero, the Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies from 1999 until 2015, and Professor Emeritus Dr. Howard Handelman, Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies from 1994 until 1999.<\/p>\n
