Graduate Student Research-Conference Award Competition<\/h2>\n

Overview<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n

The Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies, through a collaborative arrangement with the Dean of the College of Letters and Science, offers funding to master\u2019s and doctoral students in any field to support field research in Latin America or the Caribbean; or to support presentations at a professional conference\/workshop, or similar opportunity. The typical award ranges from $250-$500. Such activities are an important part of the professional development of graduate students, offering opportunities to establish professional networks, contacts for collaborative research, and sources of potential future employment.<\/p>\n

Eligibility<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Currently enrolled 51ÁÔÆæ graduate student in any program (any 51ÁÔÆæ College or School)<\/li>\n
  2. Must have a field research proposal, presentation, or other work centered on the Latin American\/Caribbean region<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Categories of award (according to priority)<\/h3>\n
      \n
    1. Field research expenditures<\/li>\n
    2. Presentation at a professional conference or workshop, or similar opportunity (Registration\/Conference fees, lodging, flight, etc).<\/li>\n
    3. Approved Research Materials\/Supplies, such as books, maps, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Note: Conferences\/Workshops do not have to take place in Latin America\/Caribbean, but the work you\u2019re presenting must be centered on Latin American and\/or Caribbean content<\/p>\n

      Application Deadlines<\/h3>\n

      December 15, 2025 f<\/strong>or expenditures between February 1 – April 30, 2026<\/p>\n

      March 15, 2026<\/strong> for expenditures May 1-June 30, 2026.<\/p>\n

      Applications may be accepted on a rolling basis-check with<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Aimee Orndorf<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>for more information<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Application<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Students are encouraged to apply by the deadlines, but applications may be accepted throughout the year.<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Graduate Research-Conference Online Application<\/a>, which consists of:\n
          \n
        1. Personal\/academic information, type of request<\/li>\n
        2. 1-2 page proposal about your research (scholarly purpose, applicable research methodology, anticipated outcome, and project timeline) or an abstract of your conference presentation. For either request please explain how the activity is connected to the CLACS mission as a Latin America\/Caribbean national resource center;<\/li>\n
        3. Budget summary of costs that includes schedule and total anticipated expenses;<\/li>\n
        4. Uploaded current curriculum vitae;<\/li>\n
        5. Uploaded acceptance of your conference presentation proposal (if applicable);<\/li>\n
        6. One letter of recommendation from your 51ÁÔÆæ faculty advisor or other professor, on department letterhead and addressed to the faculty review committee. Students are responsible for contacting the faculty member and ensuring that a letter of recommendation is submitted directly by the recommender<\/strong> to aorndorf@uwm.edu by the application deadline.<\/li>\n
        7. \u00a0Uploaded copy of your unofficial graduate\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0undergraduate transcripts<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Failure to secure pre-authorization may result in denied reimbursement of expenses. A Spend Authorization must be approved before any reimbursable purchases occur. However, it is not required that the Spend Authorization is approved by the time the application is submitted.<\/p>\n

          Award Guidelines<\/h3>\n

          Please work with Aimee Orndorf before making any purchases. Awardees must comply with the State and UW System travel policies and procedures, UW system regulations, any other Center instructions. Approved expenses may be awarded as a reimbursement through the E-Reimbursement system or transferred to recipient’s home department. Receipts are required. Students planning to drive personal vehicles or rental cars must be registered and authorized by 51ÁÔÆæ. See the Drivers Risk Management<\/a>\u00a0website.<\/p>\n

          Awards notification will be approximately two to three weeks after the application deadline.<\/em><\/p>\n

          *Depending upon available funds, the review process may take into account the number of times a student has previously received CLACS funding support.
