{"id":7642,"date":"2025-11-25T11:49:37","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T17:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/?page_id=7642"},"modified":"2026-04-16T12:00:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T17:00:44","slug":"taking-a-leave-of-absence","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/services\/students\/maintaining-your-status\/taking-a-leave-of-absence\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking a Leave of Absence\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p class=\"lead-in\">If you do not plan to enroll in the upcoming semester, or if you need to&nbsp;withdraw from&nbsp;all coursework in the current semester, you will not be able to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;your F-1 visa requirements. Therefore, you must apply for an Authorized Early Withdrawal (immigration leave of absence) and leave the U.S. Meet with an immigration coordinator prior to&nbsp;finalizing&nbsp;your decision.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-authorized-early-withdrawal-nbsp-considerations\">Authorized Early Withdrawal&nbsp;Considerations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>51ÁÔÆæ<\/strong>: Work with your academic or faculty advisor to understand how taking an academic leave of absence would affect you academically, and if there are any procedures you need to complete with your department or the Graduate School.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Housing<\/strong>: Work with University Housing or your landlord to understand your responsibilities and the regulations related to your plan of leaving the U.S. and cancelling your housing contract or lease.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>51ÁÔÆæ Funding:&nbsp;<\/strong>If you currently have an assistantship or scholarship through 51ÁÔÆæ, you should&nbsp;determine&nbsp;if it will be reinstated when you return to your studies.&nbsp;Students with assistantships should discuss this with their&nbsp;department,&nbsp;and students with scholarships should contact the scholarship office for&nbsp;additional&nbsp;information.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immigration<\/strong>:&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meet with an immigration coordinator to understand your options and the consequences of taking an academic leave of absence and applying for an Authorized Early Withdrawal (AEW).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If&nbsp;you will&nbsp;take the leave of absence, you must&nbsp;submit&nbsp;the \u201cAuthorized Early Withdrawal (Leave of Absence) Request\u201d in your ISSS Connect Portal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your SEVIS record will be&nbsp;terminated, and you will have&nbsp;15 days&nbsp;to leave the U.S.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must continue&nbsp;participating&nbsp;in your coursework until your AEW request is approved. Do not withdraw from your coursework prior to the AEW approval.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approval of the AEW will not withdraw you from your&nbsp;coursework,&nbsp;you must&nbsp;take action&nbsp;to be withdrawn from your coursework.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your on-campus employment eligibility and any CPT\/OPT authorizations end upon approval of the AEW.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-resuming-study-after-a-leave-of-absence-nbsp\">Resuming Study After a Leave of Absence&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To return to 51ÁÔÆæ to resume your studies in-person, you will need a new I-20 to be eligible to request entry to the U.S. Email&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:isss@uwm.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">isss@uwm.edu<\/a>&nbsp;at least 2-3 months before the start date of the semester you plan to resume your studies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eligibility to Enroll:<\/strong>&nbsp;You must be eligible to enroll for the semester you plan to return before you can request a new I-20. Your eligibility to enroll can be verified in your PAWS account. Work with your academic or faculty advisor&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;your eligibility to enroll for the semester you plan to return. Note that a re-entry admission application may be&nbsp;required; email&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:isss@uwm.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">isss@uwm.edu<\/a>&nbsp;for instructions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Requesting a new I-20:\u00a0<\/strong>Most students will\u00a0be required\u00a0to request a new initial I-20. After contacting\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:isss@uwm.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">isss@uwm.edu<\/a>\u00a0about your intended return, you will be provided detailed instructions on how to\u00a0submit\u00a0your I-20 request.\u00a0All students will\u00a0be required\u00a0to provide full\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/services\/students\/proof-of-funding\/\">proof of funding<\/a>\u00a0to request the I-20.\u00a0Important reminders if you are issued a new initial I-20:\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will&nbsp;be required&nbsp;to pay the I-901 fee for the new SEVIS record.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You cannot enter the U.S. before the \u201cEarliest Admission Date\u201d listed on the I-20, which is&nbsp;30 days&nbsp;prior to your I-20\u2019s listed program start date.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must complete two semesters of full-time enrollment once you have returned to in-person studies to regain eligibility for OPT and CPT authorization.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note: In limited circumstances, some students may be eligible to request reactivation of their prior SEVIS record.
