{"id":4134,"date":"2023-04-25T12:31:22","date_gmt":"2023-04-25T17:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/services\/students\/travel\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T13:03:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:03:06","slug":"travel","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/services\/students\/travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p>You should consider the following when planning to travel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-travel-outside-the-u-s\">Travel Outside the U.S.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion uwm-p-accordion--icon-left-circle\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uwm\" data-accordion-cool-selectors=\"1\"><button class=\"uwm-p-accordion--toggle-button size-p-md\">Expand All<\/button>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Documents Needed for Travel Outside the U.S.<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p><strong>When traveling outside the U.S. as an F-1 or J-1 student or scholar, you will need the following documents to return:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity upon return to the United States\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you plan to renew your passport at home please check renewal times before you travel so that your return to the U.S. will not be delayed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A valid F-1 or J-1 visa\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your visa is expired, you will need a new unexpired visa to request entry to the U.S.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have changed your status to F-1 or J-1 while in the U.S. you will need to apply for and obtain an F-1 or J-1 visa to request entry to the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Current Transcripts or proof of funding is not required, but recommended<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For J-1 students and scholars:&nbsp;<\/strong>DS-2019 endorsed for travel by an ISSS coordinator within the&nbsp;<strong>past 6 months<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For F-1 students not on OPT:&nbsp;<\/strong>a valid I-20 endorsed for travel by an ISSS coordinator within the&nbsp;<strong>past 12 months.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you are traveling outside of the U.S. and require a travel endorsement, you must submit the travel endorsement request through your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isssconnect.uwm.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISSS Connect portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For F-1 students on OPT:<\/strong>&nbsp;a valid I-20 endorsed for travel by an ISSS coordinator within the&nbsp;<strong>past 6 months<\/strong>&nbsp;and your valid EAD card and employment letter.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you are traveling outside of the U.S. and require a travel endorsement, you must submit the travel endorsement request through your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isssconnect.uwm.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISSS Connect portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Valid Visa Requirement for Re-entry to the U.S.<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p><strong>Your F-1 or J-1 visa must be valid to request re-entry to&nbsp;the U.S.&nbsp;Consider the following before traveling back and requesting re-entry to the U.S.:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The expiration date of your visa must be on or after your return date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of entries listed on your visa allowing for your re-entry.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The letter \u201cM\u201d in this section of your visa indicates multiple entries that are not limited.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some visas have a number for entries; ensure that you have enough allowed re-entries available to be eligible for re-entry upon your return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Students with a valid visa in an expired passport:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You may continue to use the valid visa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A valid passport is required to request re-entry to the U.S.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will continue to use the valid visa that is in your expired passport.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will need to carry both your expired passport with the valid visa&nbsp;<em>AND<\/em>&nbsp;the unexpired passport to request re-entry to the U.S.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure your valid visa is physically intact and does not have any cuts or holes in it, even if the expired passport does have cuts or holes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Students with an expired visa:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will need to apply for a new visa before you will be eligible to request re-entry to the U.S.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visas can only be issued while outside the U.S.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply for a complete list of visa requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effective September 6, 2025, visa applicants should schedule their visa interview in their country of residence or nationality. More information can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas.html\">https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas.html<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students from countries subject to a travel ban should consider the potential impacts of the presidential proclamations regarding travel bans. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of consular processing times and appointment availability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Automatic Visa Revalidation<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>If you plan to visit Canada, Mexico or adjacent islands (excluding Cuba) for less than 30 days, you may be able to return to the U.S. with an expired F-1 or J-1 visa. Make an appointment with an Immigration Coordinator to see if you qualify.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">What to do Upon Return to the U.S.<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p><strong>Upon your return to the U.S.:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review for accuracy, download, and keep for your records a copy of your new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I-94 record<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your entry is not reflected correctly after 24 hours from your entry to the U.S., make an appointment with an Immigration Coordinator for assistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine if you need to consult with an Immigration Coordinator if you were given any materials by Customs and Border Protection Officials at the Port of Entry (ex. an I-515A\/Deferred Inspection I-94 and letter; DHS Form I-193)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-travel-within-the-u-s\">Travel Within the U.S.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When traveling you should always be able to document your immigration status, particularly while traveling in the U.S. This means having your passport, <a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Most Recent I-94<\/a>, and I-20\/DS-2019 with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be extremely cautious when traveling near a U.S. border to ensure you don\u2019t unintentionally cross into a different country.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col uwm-l-col--4 uwm-l-offset--1\"><div class=\"content_block\" id=\"custom_post_widget-4219\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-buttons--full\">\n<a class=\"uwm-c-button uwm-c-button--full uwm-u-mb-20\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isssconnect.uwm.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\" rel=\"\">ISSS Connect Portal Login<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"content_block\" id=\"custom_post_widget-4213\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h5 uwm-u-mb-20 uwm-u-mt-0\" id=\"h-immigration-information-amp-resources\"><strong>Immigration Information<\/strong> <strong>&amp;
