To begin, you must be admitted to either the Milwaukee or Waukesha campus locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">Click <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.academicworks.com\/opportunities?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;term=&amp;scopes%5B%5D=423&amp;commit=Filter+Opportunities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> for more information about the process and scholarships.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/uwmilwaukee.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant<\/a> provides funding for qualifying undergraduate 51ÁÔÆæ students to offset the cost of study abroad. Funding is contingent upon state budget legislation. The amount of funding awarded per student differs from year to year based on the number of qualified applicants. If you are participating in a semester or year-long program, you will likely receive more funding than if you participate in a short-term summer or UWinteriM program. The maximum award is $2,000. The average award is $500 \u2013 $800 for a short-term program and $1,000 for a semester. Meeting application requirements for the grant does not guarantee an award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To qualify for a Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant you must:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list uwm-c-link--external\">\n<li>be a Wisconsin resident.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be enrolled in a 51ÁÔÆæ Associate&#8217;s or first Bachelor&#8217;s degree program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be participating in a 51ÁÔÆæ-sponsored study abroad program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/\">Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA)<\/a> application on file, and be listed with the Federal Student Financial Aid System.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be enrolled full-time in the preceding semester to qualify for a summer or UWinteriM award (Academic Opportunity Center students must be enrolled for 9+ credits during the fall\/spring term).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be enrolled in at least 6 credits by April 30 (includes on-campus credits as well as any study abroad credits) during the summer term to qualify for a summer award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s CIE, Department of Financial Aid, Student Employment and Military Education Benefits offices evaluate applicants and make grant awards accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application Deadlines:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>October 15 for UWinteriM and Spring programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>March 15 for Summer and Fall\/Academic Year programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note \u2013 any student currently applying to study abroad in a country with a U.S. Department of State travel advisory of 3 or 4 or a CDC travel notice of 3 or 4 will need to complete an additional approval process. Eligible students would only receive the Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant if this approval is granted.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">51ÁÔÆæ Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) Scholarships<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) at 51ÁÔÆæ develops, supports, and promotes teaching, research, and outreach about Latin America and the Caribbean. They offer various scholarships, fellowships, and research-travel grants such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Donald R. Shea Scholarship:<\/strong> The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers a limited number of scholarships in the amount of $250-500 for undergraduate students demonstrating academic interest in Latin American and\/or Caribbean studies. The scholarship may be used for 51ÁÔÆæ sponsored semester-long or short-term study abroad in the Latin American\/Caribbean region, and for other academic opportunities in the region that can be accepted for 51ÁÔÆæ credit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information, visit their <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/clacs\/funding\/undergraduate-student-funding\/shea-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>websi<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/clacs\/funding\/undergraduate-student-funding\/shea-scholarship\/\">te<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship for Undergraduates<\/strong>: The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), through funding made possible by the U.S. Department of Education (US\/ED), invites eligible undergraduate students to apply for academic year fellowships (two awards) for the study of intermediate or advanced&nbsp;<strong>Portuguese<\/strong>&nbsp;language in combination with Latin American and Caribbean area studies courses. 51ÁÔÆæ Letters and Science students and those from the professional Schools\/Colleges, as well as underrepresented students, are all encouraged to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information, visit their <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/clacs\/funding\/undergraduate-student-funding\/flacs-undergrad-fellowships\/\"><strong>website<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship for Graduate Students:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These fellowships are awarded to promote training in less commonly taught languages of the region for students pursuing a Latin American\/Caribbean area studies specialization in their graduate program. The scholarship will award $1,000 to the nursing applicant who best personifies the way Rita Mae Conway lived her life: care for others, volunteering, and most importantly, love of family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For information on how to apply, please see the official Scholarship&nbsp;flyer, or contact Mike Walk at <a href=\"mailto:walk@uwm.edu\">walk@uwm.edu<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/panthers.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/s\/CIE\/studyabroad\/EYFr9yCvETROjI06AJFhGGABTxQoaMDuNBo92JMnLBuWtA?e=h1VmW9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RitaMaeMemorial<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">The Humanity in Action Fellowship<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>The Humanity in Action Fellowship is an intensive and demanding program that brings international groups of university students and recent graduates together to explore national histories of discrimination and resistance, as well as issues affecting the various minority groups today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students and recent graduates from universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">For more information please visit their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanityinaction.org\/programs\/14-humanity-in-action-fellowship\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Rotary Grants<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>The grants are provided to scholars that are expected to be outstanding ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">Additional eligibility requirements, application procedures, and further details can be found by visiting their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotary.org\/myrotary\/en\/take-action\/apply-grants\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">Phi Kappa Phi study abroad grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.&nbsp; Forty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year.&nbsp; Please see eligibility requirements, application requirements, deadline information, and contact information on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phikappaphi.org\/grants-awards\/study-abroad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"national\">National Scholarships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion uwm-p-accordion--icon-left-circle\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uwm\" data-accordion-cool-selectors=\"1\"><button class=\"uwm-p-accordion--toggle-button size-p-md\">Expand All<\/button>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>This scholarship program awards Pell Grant recipients up to $5,000 to study abroad for a semester or year. Gilman scholarships are awarded every semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please visit the <a class=\"uwm-c-link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gilmanscholarship.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gilman website<\/a> for more information on the scholarship. Contact the Scholarship advisor Kate Betka (kbetka@uwm.edu) for more information about on-campus advising opportunities and guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, students who have taken advantage of on-campus advising have been more likely to receive the award than students who applied on their own.&nbsp; The scholarship advisor and a designated financial aid advisor must certify all Gilman applications coming from 51ÁÔÆæ in order for them to be considered complete.&nbsp; Even if you do not wish to pursue on-campus advising, please let the scholarship advisor know if you plan to apply for this scholarship. All applicants will need to provide the scholarship advisor with required information in order for them to certify their application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Informational sessions are held twice a year for anyone interested in applying for this scholarship. Information on dates, times and locations of these and many other sessions can be found on our <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/events\">Study Abroad Events page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">NSEP Boren Awards for International Study<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Boren Scholarships provide up to $25,000 to U.S. undergraduate students studying abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad,&nbsp; including Africa, Asia, Central &amp; Eastern Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are NOT included. Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 in funding to graduate students meeting the same language and regional&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadly defined, Boren applicants must identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security.&nbsp; NSEP uses a broad definition of national security because the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society. Such challenges include sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students selected to receive a Boren Scholarship must commit to working for the U.S. government for at least a year following the completion of their education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awards are given away once a year with deadlines in January for study beginning between June 1, the year of the award or the following March 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deadlines &amp; Information:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Campus candidate review is available, but a complete application must be received by December 1 for consideration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scholarship and Fellowship (for graduate students) have different deadlines, so please check the Boren website to confim the time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a very competitive scholarship. The CLS Program provides fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for undergraduate and graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Languages offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>U.S. citizenship is required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students from all academic disciplines including business, engineering, law, medicine, sciences, and humanities are encouraged to apply<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While there is no service requirement attached to the CLS awards, participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their skills in their professional careers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">Please find the application along with more information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/clscholarship.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLS Scholarship website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">The Fulbright Program for U.S. Students<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>The Fulbright Program is administered by The Institute of International Education (IIE) and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aifsabroad.com\/scholarships.asp\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AIFS website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">API Scholarships<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">API awards approximately $400,000 in study abroad scholarships annually ranging from $250 -$1,000 per student. Students may apply for multiple API scholarships (though may only be awarded one. Please see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apistudyabroad.com\/students\/financial-information\/scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">API website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">CAPA Scholarships<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">CAPA International Education has more than doubled the amount of scholarship money awarded annually to program participants. Each year, thousands of dollars in scholarships will be given to students who submit application materials demonstrating high academic achievement and financial need. Students accepted to participate in this program are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. When applying, students have four award period options to choose from (one year, nine months, six months, or three months). Recipients of this scholarship will be awarded approximately $790 per month for the duration of their award period.
