{"id":10547,"date":"2025-08-11T15:45:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T20:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/webid2-test-lsweb\/?page_id=7445"},"modified":"2026-03-05T10:23:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T16:23:26","slug":"financial-support","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/chemistry\/students\/graduate\/financial-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial Support for Graduate Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-funding-your-degree-nbsp\"><strong>Funding Your Degree<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of our graduate students receive financial support as a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/assistantships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teaching assistant (TA), research assistant (RA), or with a fellowship<\/a>. All of these positions provide:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A living stipend.<\/strong>\u202fStipends for TAs, RAs, and fellowship recipients are typically supplemented by Chancellor\u2019s Graduate Student Awards (CGSA), resulting in a total compensation between $19,500 \u2013 $22,285 for the 9-month academic year. Many students also receive some additional summer support.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Benefits including access to health insurance.<\/strong>\u202fThe university pays most health insurance costs. The student contribution is currently about $68 per month for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/hr\/benefits\/health-insurances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">single person and varies for family plans.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Full tuition remission.<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>Tuition remission means that funded students do not pay tuition.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/finances\/finances\/estimating-your-costs\/tuition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mandatory segregated fees<\/a>&nbsp;are not covered by tuition remission. These fees provide access to a variety of student services and activities, such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Health Center<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/urec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recreation center<\/a>, free&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/boss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shuttle service<\/a>, and unlimited free rides on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ridemcts.com\/fares\/u-pass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) buses<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conference travel funds.<\/strong>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/travel-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Graduate School<\/a>&nbsp;and the Department of Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry both provide funds to help all students present work at professional conferences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note the stipends and health insurance costs are based on the 2025-2026 academic year and are subject to change.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resources<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Graduate stipend and credit requirement information is from the 51ÁÔÆæ Graduate School, specifically the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduate-assistants\/handbook\/appointments-and-benefits\/stipend-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Salary Schedules<\/a>&nbsp;for teaching, project and research assistants.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tuition and general academic information is from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/registrar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51ÁÔÆæ Registrar\u2019s Office<\/a>.
