October 14: Fostering Trust in Storytelling with Brad Lichtenstein,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>9 \u2013 10:30 AM (Curtin 939)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker Brad Lichtenstein<\/span><\/b> will facilitate a discussion on large scale story projects, including processes he uses to build trust with interviewees; establishing consent; the \u201cground rules\u201d he establishes during story project; and organizing\/archiving story materials.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Brad is an award-winning filmmaker who has been making documentaries since 1998 and founded 371 Productions in 2003. His recent film, <\/span>When Claude Got Shot<\/span><\/b> (produced with Stick Figure) premiered at the 2021 SXSW film festival, was featured in May of 2022 on PBS\u2019 series Independent Lens, and won the <\/span>2022 Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking<\/span><\/b>. He\u2019s been nominated for two Emmys: one Sports Emmy for the VR film <\/span>Ashe \u201968<\/span><\/b>, which premiered at Sundance in 2019, and a News and Documentary Emmy for the 2012 Independent Lens\/PBS film <\/span>As Goes Janesville<\/span><\/b>. He\u2019s won two Duponts: one for the 2016 Al Jazeera America series <\/span>Hard Earned<\/span><\/b> (produced with Kartemquin Films) and another for his 2001 film <\/span>Ghosts of Attica<\/span><\/b> (produced with Lumiere Productions). His latest work is <\/span>American Reckoning<\/span><\/b> (with producer\/director Yoruba Richen) for Frontline, a film about a Black resistance movement in Natchez, MS, and the murder of civil rights leader Wharlest Jackson, Sr. With Emily Kuester, he directed <\/span>Messwood<\/span><\/b> for Participant, which premiered in 2021 at DocNYC. The film follows a high school football team made up of kids who come from two different communities; one suburban and white and the other urban and Black. Brad directed <\/span>Metcalfe Park: Black Vote rising<\/span><\/b> in 2020 with Miela Fetaw \u2014 a short for PBS\/World Channel and The Intercept. His 2018 film <\/span>There Are Jews Here<\/span><\/b> won a Telly award and was broadcast on PBS\/World. He was nominated for a Peabody for his radio series about gun violence, Precious Lives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
