Hosted by C21 and moderated by Director Jennifer Johung, the event brought together Milwaukee-based humanities leaders from higher education to ask urgent questions about the present and future of humanities work in a moment of political, financial, and cultural uncertainty. Panelists included Michael Carriere (MSOE), Art Derse (MCW), Jodi Eastberg (MIAD), and Maggie Nettesheim Hoffmann (Marquette).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the panel, attendees participated in facilitated breakout discussions and completed a post-event survey. The report brings these voices together, offering a grounded, collective assessment of how the humanities are being sustained, challenged, and reimagined across Milwaukee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-u-flex uwm-u-flex--wrap uwm-u-flex--center-x uwm-l-grid-row--30 uwm-l-grid-column--30 uwm-l-grid--3 uwm-l-grid--equal-y\">\n<a class=\"uwm-c-button uwm-u-mx-10 uwm-u-mb-20\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/c21\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/359\/2026\/02\/State-of-the-Humaities-MKE-Printable.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the State of the Humanities MKE Report<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity uwm-c-hr--center-short\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-takeaways\">Key Takeaways<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The humanities are not dying; outdated systems are. <\/strong>Participants emphasized that while institutional structures are under strain, people continue to seek meaning, context, and connection through humanities work both inside and outside universities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The current crisis is political, not cultural.<\/strong> Federal funding cuts, curriculum policing, and cultural erasure were widely understood as political decisions rather than evidence of declining public interest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The humanities are essential for survival, joy, and collective meaning.<\/strong> Panelists and participants alike rejected narrow economic justifications in favor of values such as dignity, imagination, and community care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The future of the humanities is local and collaborative.<\/strong> Respondents called for reciprocal partnerships among universities, nonprofits, artists, and community organizations rooted in Milwaukee\u2019s existing cultural ecosystems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainability requires collective care for labor.<\/strong> From graduate students to community practitioners, participants stressed the need for new funding models and shared responsibility that recognize invisible and precarious labor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity uwm-c-hr--center-short\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-additional-exploration\">Additional Exploration <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Read reflections from C21 Graduate Fellows Chloe Kwiatkowski and Jamee N.
