Working within a firm or organization allows students to acquire and apply knowledge through direct experience in a field related to their academic program. There are two types of internship for credit opportunities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Academic Internships:<\/strong> Generally part-time positions and may be paid or unpaid positions. Requires a minimum of 150 hours. Credits earned through this internship can be applied to business or general electives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Professional Internships:<\/strong> Must be a full-time and paid position that is intended to lead to full- time employment. Requires a minimum of 400 hours (typically minimum of 10-weeks). Credits earned through this internship can be applied towards major requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eligibility\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who have faculty approval and have completed the course prerequisites are eligible to enroll in an internship. Course prerequisites are stated below and are enforced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-academic-internships\">Academic Internships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Human Resources Management &#8211; Bus Adm 394:<\/strong> junior standing, admission to the Human Resources Management or General Business major; written consent of designated instructor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-professional-internships\">Professional Internships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Human Resources Management &#8211; Bus Adm 449:<\/strong> junior standing and admission to the Human Resources Management major or General Business major; BUS ADM 300(P) or BUS ADM 303(P); completion of at least one 400- or 500-level course in the Human Resources Management major; written consent of the designated instructor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-policies\">Policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Credit for the internship must be approved prior to the start of the internship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students completing the internship must have an approved faculty supervisor and an on-site supervisor during the internship.\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The designated faculty supervisor (listed below) in conjunction with the Career Services representative will determine if a position qualifies for internship credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must meet with the supervising faculty member to review your learning goals and professional development plan and to complete the Method of Assessment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The duties or responsibilities called for by the internship:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>require the student to have a significant knowledge base. Please refer to the internship prerequisites listed under the Eligibility Section above;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>must present new areas of the discipline that are uniquely and significantly different from that experienced in previous positions of employment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>must cover minimum number of hours (see above);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>directly relate to the major area;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>include learned skills that are transferable to other settings.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All internships are completed for 3 credits and are graded Credit\/No Credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Credit for an internship will be granted only when the internship is completed. Students must be registered for and complete the internship during the semester in which they receive academic credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may complete only one internship course per major area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students cannot complete an internship and a Bus Adm 499 \u2013 Research in Industry with the same company.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-find-internships\">How to Find Internships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Search for open positions on <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.joinhandshake.com\/login\">Handshake<\/a>, LinkedIn, Indeed, or by attending the career fair. If new to Handshake, you must activate your account first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Career Services Center in Lubar N203 can help find positions. They can also provide feedback on your resume, cover letter, and interviewing skills. Schedule an appointment via Handshake or reach out to them by email (<a href=\"mailto:careerserv@uwm.edu\"><\/a>get-experience@uwm.edu) or by phone (414-229-5445)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-register\">How to Register<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check if you are eligible by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/milwaukee.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_bvytPbZvueFWqbk\">Internship for Credit Eligibility Survey<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create an Internship Learning Plan (see below). This will be entered into Handshake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share the learning plan with your site supervisor from the internship, so they can agree on supporting you with those goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet with a designated faculty supervisor (see below) to review the internship position and the learning plan. Ask about their expectations for the method of assessment and internship closing activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit your Internship for Credit application through <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.joinhandshake.com\/login\">Handshake<\/a> &#8211; <strong>Please note, responses cannot be saved and completed later. Gather the required information in advance of filling out the application.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Watch this detailed video on <a href=\"https:\/\/panthers.sharepoint.com\/:v:\/s\/SET-Group\/EftG-nRPnHFOszShF3x_SpgBZld2iHFPYq4QtjYGHsHh-w\">how to submit the application as an &#8220;experience&#8221; in Handshake<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Handshake, click on \u201cCareer Center\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on \u201cExperiences,\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then click on \u201cSubmit an Experience\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the experience template that relates to your major or internship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill out the required information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After submitting the experience, attach a document for the position description if needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell your faculty supervisor and site supervisor to expect an e-mail from Handshake requesting their approval of the internship. They may need to check their junk folder. A Handshake account is not required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor the approval progress in Handshake:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Career services will review the submission for approval.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The designated faculty member will then review for approval.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If academic prerequisites are met, your academic advisor will approve and give you permission in PAWS to enroll in the course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After your advisor notifies you about the permission, you must enroll in the class on your end.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The approval process may take up to 2-3 weeks to complete, so start this process early to complete on time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice uwm-p-notice--info\"><i class=\"fa-solid fa-circle-info fa-fw\"><\/i><div class=\"uwm-p-notice--content\"><div class=\"uwm-p-notice--message\">You must submit the internship experience application via Handshake and obtain all approvals by <strong>4:30 pm on first day of class for a given semester.<\/strong><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-guidelines-for-creating-a-learning-plan\">Guidelines for Creating a Learning Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Complete the Learning Goals &amp; Professional Development sections prior to meeting with your faculty and site supervisors. The purpose of the Learning Plan is to think through your goals for academic learning and\/or application prior to the internship experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-academic-learning-goals\">Academic Learning Goals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning goals should be reflective, intentional, and relevant to your internship experience. The following are examples of how to state your learning goals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI will demonstrate the ability to \u2026..\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI will apply theory\/concepts\/learning from <strong>__<\/strong> courses to\u2026..\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI will learn\/develop\u2026..\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI will intentionally explore\u2026..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-skill-development\">Skill Development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the focus of your internship, you will likely have a chance to develop discipline-specific and\/or transferable skills. Discipline-specific skills will depend on your major. In addition to discipline- specific skills, consider these other skill-development areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Critical thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information literacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Citizenship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organization\/Planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Team building<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Computer skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Networking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>List your primary goals for academic learning and\/or skill development and application. What is it you want to learn or be able to do? How will you apply course concepts into this internship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-personal-professional-development-career-awareness\">Personal\/Professional Development, Career Awareness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to your academic learning goals, consider how this experience will allow you to develop professionally. Consider your values, skills, interests, abilities and how they may impact or be impacted by this learning experience. Take every opportunity to learn about specific career positions and occupations, training required, and professional development opportunities. Consider how this internship will contribute to your understanding of the workplace, operational procedures, organizational structure and culture and get a sense of the overall work environment.
