To earn the major, students take required courses and engage in laboratory and\/or field research in cell biology, genetics, and ecology. Students also engage in independent research projects and internships with external groups. After the core courses, students take upper-level electives in areas including Molecular Genetics, Neurobiology, Ecology and Evolution, Microbiology, Marine and Freshwater Biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2020\/10\/image-for-Declare-your-major-page.jpg\" alt=\"Groups of students doing lab and field work\" class=\"wp-image-5731\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2020\/10\/image-for-Declare-your-major-page.jpg 698w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2020\/10\/image-for-Declare-your-major-page-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the successful completion of Bio Sci 150, students declare their major in biological sciences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students wishing to explore diverse interests in biological sciences can choose the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biology\/academics\/biological-sciences-ba\/general-biology-option\/\">general biology option<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students interested in studying the structure and function of organisms and biological processes at the level of cells and macromolecules can choose the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biology\/academics\/biological-sciences-ba\/cell-and-molecular-biology-option\/\">cellular and molecular biology option (CMB)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students interested in exploring the mechanisms governing interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment can choose the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biology\/academics\/biological-sciences-ba\/ecology-evolution-and-behavior-option\/\">ecology, evolution, and behavioral biology option (EEB)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The department also offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/biology\/academics\/microbiology-bs\/\">major in microbiology<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A degree in Biological Sciences provides excellent preparation for a variety of careers and post-graduate degree programs including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Professional graduate programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Genetic Counseling, Physician\u2019s Assistant, and Pharmacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MS and PhD programs in a variety of disciplines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economically important Wisconsin industries including brewing, dairy industry, and agricultural biotechnology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positions in the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, academic research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positions in conservation biology and restoration ecology, environmental management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positions in consulting firms and government regulatory agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To initiate your declaration of a biological science major, fill out and declaration of major form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-u-flex uwm-u-flex--wrap uwm-u-flex--left\">\n<a class=\"uwm-c-button uwm-u-mr-20 uwm-u-mb-20\" href=\"https:\/\/ls-apps.ad.uwm.edu\/secure\/declaration\/major\/prod\/index.php?departmentFilter=biological-sciences\" rel=\"\">Declare Your Major<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be contacted by the Departmental Coordinator who will assist you in the process of completing your declaration of major\/minor and connecting you with a faculty advisor in your specific area of interest within the biological sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a biology student at 51ÁÔÆæ, you will receive a strong foundation in all areas of biology and the natural sciences to prepare you for a career or\u00a0graduate school.
