51ÁÔÆæ’s Brief Alcohol & Other Drug Screening & Intervention Programs offer students the opportunity to explore their use of and experiences with alcohol and\/or other drugs in a nonjudgmental and confidential setting. Offered by the Student Health and Wellness Center, Office of Health Promotion & Advocacy, the goal is to help students make substance use decisions that result in fewer negative consequences.<\/p>\n
<\/code><\/pre>\nAll sessions will be held IN PERSON at:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\nNorthwest Quadrant, Building D, 8th Floor.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/h3>\n <\/span><\/code><\/pre>\nPrograms Offered – BASICS I and BASICS II<\/code><\/code><\/h2>\n\u2022 BASICS I. <\/strong>Brief Alcohol and other drug Screening & Intervention for College Students – Level 1<\/em> includes an initial 90-minute session plus a one-hour follow-up session with a trained facilitator. Students are provided with personalized feedback about their substance use and individual risk factors based on information shared by the student through discussion, reflection, and survey questions. A range of options about ways to reduce risks for harm will be explored and a plan can be made to align with the student’s interests and choices. Efforts are made to connect students with on- or off-campus resources
\nfor additional support when needed. The program does not provide a diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence.<\/p>\n\u2022 BASICS II<\/strong>. Brief Alcohol and other drug Screening & Intervention for College Students – Level 2<\/em> includes two to three 75-minute individual sessions with the Campus Alcohol & Other Drug Coordinator. BASICS I is a prerequisite* and is used as a foundation from which the student will engage in further exploration of their use of and experiences with alcohol or other drugs within the context of personal goals and values. Students will be asked to participate in experiential learning activities and to debrief those experiences. Motivation for change will be explored and a plan for reducing risks will be developed accordingly. Efforts are made to connect students with on- or off-campus resources for additional support when needed. The program does not provide a diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence.<\/p>\n* Prerequisite is waived for students who are voluntarily participating.<\/p>\n
Eligibility<\/h2>\n
Current UW Milwaukee, 51ÁÔÆæ at Waukesha and 51ÁÔÆæ at Washington County students are eligible to participate. For students who are 17 years old or younger, a signed parental consent form is required prior to participation.<\/p>\n
Fees<\/h2>\n
For students mandated\/required to participate (for example, by the University or a court\/judge) or who require proof of program completion, a non-refundable program fee will be placed on the student\u2019s PAWS account.\u00a0BASICS I is $65.00 and\u00a0BASICS II is $130.00. An exception is made for students who are assigned BASICS by 51ÁÔÆæ through the medical or victim assistance policy.<\/p>\n
There is no fee<\/strong> for 51ÁÔÆæ students who participate voluntarily (not mandated). Voluntary students typically do not receive any form of verification\/proof of completion of the program.<\/p>\nSign Up<\/h2>\n

Important! Non-refundable charges are billed for students who enroll due to a 51ÁÔÆæ sanction or court order. To avoid unnecessary charges to your PAWS account, double-check the letter\/email from your referrer BEFORE registering to verify that BASICS is required and if so, the appropriate level (I or II). If you plan to appeal your referrer’s decision, do NOT register for BASICS until the appeal process is complete. If you are at all uncertain about a mandate, contact your referrer before registering.<\/p>\n
