Local monuments to past tornadoes intertwine with mythologies of settlement and displacement. An amateur storm chaser questions his own agency and fate. The CEO of a Wizard of Oz-themed storm shelter company describes a growing market in a world of increasing weather uncertainty. Unfolding episodically\, questions of memory\, inequality\, colonization\, climate change\, and disaster capitalism arise as the film examines legacies of weather within the region colloquially known as “tornado alley.” \nCurtis Miller is a filmmaker and artist based in Chicago\, IL. RENT is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. \n\nAbout 51 Voice Area Opera Theatre’s production of RENT and La Bohème Scenes\nLarson built the show on the framework of Puccini’s La Bohème\, reimagining the opera’s themes of love\, friendship\, and survival for a new generation. Puccini’s work premiered in 1896\, and Larson’s RENT made its debut exactly one hundred years later in 1996\, a centennial link that highlights how enduring these stories truly are. While La Bohème centers on bohemian artists in 1890s Paris\, its emotional core remains strikingly similar\, and Larson honored that lineage while giving it a contemporary pulse. \nTo explore that connection\, we will present selected scenes from La Bohème prior to the full production of RENT\, offering audiences a clear window into the operatic DNA that inspired Larson’s vision. Together\, these performances reveal the timeless themes shared across a century. \nJoin us for an evening that brings two iconic works into conversation while celebrating artistry\, community\, and the diverse talents of UW-Milwaukee’s Voice Area. \n\nSeating \nThis production will be staged in 51’s stunning Jan Serr Studio\, an ideal venue located within Milwaukee’s vibrant cityscape. With four performances only\, seating will be very limited. Be sure to secure your tickets early. \n \n\nThe bar is open! 51 Peck School of the Arts is proud to partner with Saz’s to offer a limited selection of beer\, wine\, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase at this event.\n\n\n \nIn-person Tickets\n\n\n\n\nGeneral\n$22\n\n\nSeniors 65+\, *51 Faculty\, Staff & Alumni\n$17\n\n\nYouth 17 and Under\n$12\n\n\n*51 Student\n$12\n\n\n*If you have a 51 email account\, please log in when visiting the Box Office page in order to display all 51 affiliated ticket pricing.\n\n\nPurchase Tickets \nView Program (PDF) URL:/arts/event/rent/ LOCATION:Kenilworth Square East\, Jan Serr Studio\, 2155 N. For each program\, the curator is invited to program a selection of films around a theme of their choosing. \nThe Cinema Arts Archive now contains over 400 essential works on 16mm film\, and a handful on 35mm\, from a range of historic and contemporary cinema. Alongside giants like Hollis Frampton\, Bruce Baillie\, Deborah Stratman\, and Jennifer Reeves lie many lesser-known gems ready to ignite curiosity and expand minds. While the collection aims to capture an array of crucial cinematic history\, modes\, and movements\, the majority of work is artist-made\, short form\, and experimental in nature. \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with 51’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Attendees will examine how nonfiction stories can amplify marginalized voices\, engage local communities\, and move audiences toward awareness and action. Through case studies and practical discussion\, the workshop addresses ethical storytelling\, relationship-building with participants\, and strategies for designing films with impact beyond the screen—equipping emerging filmmakers to tell responsible\, community-centered stories that matter. \nOur guest\, Eric Kleppe-Montenegro is interested in challenging dominant narratives about marginalized communities and highlighting change-makers through storytelling. Growing up as a Colombian-American helped him understand the damage of pervasive stereotypes commonly reproduced in film and television. He also recognizes the true beauty that is left out of narrow perspectives\, a beauty which should be celebrated. Eric is passionate about creating impactful art that uplifts and inspires viewers. This passion led him to documenting social justice movements for the last decade\, specifically within the immigrant rights movement\, and allowed him to collaborate with creatives across lines of difference. \nSpecial Features is an art and film focused professional development workshop series curated by the Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \n \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.
