The feeling of watching your film on screen in a theatre amongst an audience\, when the lights dim and the first few seconds begin\, is like no other. But the road to festivals can feel like a mystical experience and one defined by luck or chance\, often making the goal of screening feel out of reach. At Special Features\, we’re interested in pulling you behind the curtain to make film festivals feel more attainable. From submission strategies to festival research to competitions\, rejections\, fees and waivers\, we’re going to dive deep into how to navigate film festivals for emerging filmmakers. \nThis workshop also will examine film festival programming as a possible career model within the film industry for those interested in more curatorial roles and positions. Our guest\, Nick Leffel\, will lead us into a bit of his career journey and offer his expertise on how to get your film seen. \nNick Leffel (51 Film Alum) is a Chicago-based filmmaker and producer whose work explores themes of cultural upbringing\, adoption\, and personal narrative. His films have earned awards at the Hollywood Screenings Film Festival in Los Angeles\, the Liverpool Underground Film Festival\, and the Milwaukee Film Festival. He also serves as a coordinator for the Black Harvest Film Festival and as an assistant programmer at the Gene Siskel Film Center at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event. The evening opens with the stirring Hungarian March from Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust\, followed by Beethoven’s powerful Coriolan Overture\, a work of dramatic intensity and noble struggle. Mascagni’s tender Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana offers a moment of lyrical beauty and reflection. \nAdding a modern and exciting touch\, the program features “Golden” from K-Pop Demon Hunters by Ejae\, arranged by Colby\, bringing contemporary energy to the orchestral stage. Selections from Bizet’s beloved Carmen Suite No. 1\, including the fiery Prélude -Aragonaise and the triumphant Les Toréadors\, promise color and excitement. \nThe evening continues with Franck’s serene and radiant Panis Angelicus\, arranged by Leopold Stokowski\, followed by the joyful A Most Wonderful Christmas arranged by Robert Sheldon. The concert concludes with two beloved dances from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite—the magical Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the exhilarating Trepak — sending audiences into the holiday season with sparkle and cheer. \nConducted by Dr. Jun Kim and Dr. Jeong-In Kim\, this concert celebrates the expressive power of orchestral music across genres and eras\, and the warmth of the season. \nThe University Community Orchestra is a full symphonic ensemble that welcomes players of all standard orchestral instruments—including strings\, woodwinds\, brass\, and percussion.
