For the MKE Mass Steel Band\, if you are a pan player who owns your own instrument and would like to participate\, please contact percussion@uwm.edu. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 17\, 7:30 pm \nMKE Mass Steel Band \nSteel pan ensembles and individual performers from around Wisconsin and Illinois will come together to form the 2026 MKE Mass Steel Band\, hosted by the 51���� Steel PANthers Steel Band. Involving over seventy performers\, the event will fill the stage with steel pans and feature a lively combination of traditional music and pop transcriptions. This year’s guest artist is Victor Provost. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nK-12 Solo & Ensemble Registration\n\n\n\nTo participate in the solo and ensemble performance opportunity individuals and ensembles must register by Monday\, April 13 to receive a time slot. \n\n\n\nRegistration is currently closed. Please email percussion@uwm.edu to inquire about any openings or possibility of late registration. \n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\n\nExpand All\nShould I bring my sticks and mallets? How about ear plugs?\nYes! We encourage you to bring some sticks and mallets as there may be opportunities to play throughout the day. It also never hurts to have hearing protection handy just in case it is needed to maintain a healthy environment. \n\n\n\n\nCan I register if I don’t live in Wisconsin?\nAbsolutely – the MKE Percussion Festival is open to everyone! \n\n\n\n\nCan I participate if I can only be there for part of the time?\nYes\, you can attend as much of the MKE Percussion Festival as you like. \n\n\n\n\nDoes it cost anything?\nNo! the MKE Percussion Festival is completely free to attend.

Drawn from the evocative paintings of Edward Hopper\, Later the Same Evening transforms still images into intimate\, overlapping human stories set in mid-century New York. Composed by John Musto with a libretto by Mark Campbell\, this American chamber opera has earned national and international recognition for its cinematic structure\, lyrical score\, and deeply human storytelling.  \n\n\n\nSince its premiere at the University of Maryland’s Opera Studio\, Later the Same Evening has been produced by leading institutions including Wolf Trap Opera\, Glimmerglass Opera\, Pittsburgh Opera\, Curtis Institute of Music\, Manhattan School of Music\, and Juilliard School\, among others. Its continued presence on major stages speaks to its unique ability to bridge visual art\, music\, and drama in a way that feels both timeless and immediate. \n\n\n\nWe are especially proud to welcome director Doug Clemons\, a dynamic force in the Milwaukee arts scene. Known for his work as both a director and actor across companies such as Florentine Opera\, Skylight Music Theatre and Milwaukee Opera Theatre\, Doug brings a wealth of experience\, nuance\, and theatrical insight to this production. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeFriday\, May 1\, 2026 (7:30–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationZelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, Bader Hall \n\n\nSeason Finale: From the New World\nFeaturing Elena Abend performing Mozart \nJoin the 51���� Symphony Orchestra for its season finale on May 1 in Bader Concert Hall. The program features Professor Elena Abend as soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor\, a rare and powerful work filled with drama and intensity. The evening culminates in Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9\, “From the New World\,” one of the most beloved and thrilling works in the orchestral repertoire. \n51����’s Symphony Orchestra is comprised of graduate and undergraduate music majors\, as well as other students. The ensemble presents seven to eight concerts each year and regularly collaborates with 51���� Choirs and Opera Theatre.  \nThe orchestra has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Chicago Symphony Center\, and the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It was selected as one of two orchestras to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Los Angeles and has appeared at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Conference. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeSunday\, May 3\, 2026 (4–5:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationZelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, Bader Hall and Virtual \n\n\nThe UW-Milwaukee Youth Wind and Percussion Ensembles program (“UWAY”) presents a program of contemporary and traditional symphonic band and wind ensemble repertoire. This concert will feature the winner of our annual UWAY Concerto Competition and recognize all of the talented graduating Seniors in the program! \nUWAY musicians are enrolled in grades eight through twelve and are actively involved in their school band/music program. Artist-faculty from UW-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts lead rehearsals and performances. They work closely with other members of the university’s vibrant performing arts community to help student musicians further their skills by learning and performing in the university setting. Band directors and private teachers throughout southeastern Wisconsin provide additional instructional support. The ensemble is open to all 51���� undergraduate and graduate music majors\, as well as non-music major students.  \nThe 51���� Afro-Caribbean Jazz Orchestra features a Latin percussion section\, horns\, and vocalists. It performs music by composers such as Tito Puente\, Ray Barretto\, Sonoro Poncena\, Evan Linns\, and more. This event is a special addition to the university-wide UW-Milwaukee commencement ceremony. \n\nRSVP \nProgram (PDF) \nLivestream\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nExpand All \nWhat is Convocation and how is it different than Commencement?\n\n\nThis special ceremony is an opportunity for Faculty & Staff in the Peck School of the Arts to recognize students who are graduating with bachelor and master’s degrees. The event was established in response to student requests and precedes the large 51���� Commencement. We encourage you to attend both ceremonies. \nThe convocation ceremony begins with a procession of graduating students into the Bader Concert Hall. Students are seated on stage with the Dean and Department Chairs. There will be an address with opening remarks and all graduates being recognized. Students will be called up by department\, with each department introduced by a selection of work representing their discipline. When your department is standing\, you will be called by name to walk across the stage and receive your stole (a piece of academic regalia\, much like a long scarf\, that you can wear with your cap and gown to the campus-wide Commencement ceremony). After the closing remarks and recessional\, everyone crosses the lobby to Zelazo 280 for a dessert reception. \n\n\nIs the event in-person or virtual?\n\n\nPSOA Convocation is an in-person event\, which will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person. \n\n\nWho should participate?\n\n\nAll Peck School of the Arts students who have graduated or will be graduating by any of the dates listed above along with friends and family of graduating students are welcome to attend. \n\n\nDoes it cost anything?\n\n\nThe event is free. Tickets are not required\, but we do appreciate that you RSVP so we can best plan for your enjoyment. \n\n\nCan I invite my family and friends?\n\n\nDefinitely! You will receive an email invitation to the Peck School of the Arts Graduation Convocation in early April.
