The program features Professor Elena Abend as soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor\, a rare and powerful work filled with drama and intensity. The evening culminates in Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9\, “From the New World\,” one of the most beloved and thrilling works in the orchestral repertoire. \n\n\n\n51����’s Symphony Orchestra is comprised of graduate and undergraduate music majors\, as well as other students. The ensemble presents seven to eight concerts each year and regularly collaborates with 51���� Choirs and Opera Theatre.  \n\n\n\nThe orchestra has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Chicago Symphony Center\, and the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It was selected as one of two orchestras to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Los Angeles and has appeared at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Conference. This concert will feature the winner of our annual UWAY Concerto Competition and recognize all of the talented graduating Seniors in the program! \nUWAY musicians are enrolled in grades eight through twelve and are actively involved in their school band/music program. Artist-faculty from UW-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts lead rehearsals and performances. They work closely with other members of the university’s vibrant performing arts community to help student musicians further their skills by learning and performing in the university setting. Band directors and private teachers throughout southeastern Wisconsin provide additional instructional support. The ensemble is open to all 51���� undergraduate and graduate music majors\, as well as non-music major students.  \nThe 51���� Afro-Caribbean Jazz Orchestra features a Latin percussion section\, horns\, and vocalists. It performs music by composers such as Tito Puente\, Ray Barretto\, Sonoro Poncena\, Evan Linns\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeSaturday\, May 16\, 2026 (7:30–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationZelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, Room 250 \n\n\nCelebrate Our Aspiring Artists!\nYou are cordially invited to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts graduation convocation for Summer 2025\, Fall 2025\, Winterim 2026 and Spring 2026 baccalaureate and master’s degree recipients. \nParticipants will assemble at 7 p.m. in the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, Room 250\, to prepare for the procession into the concert hall. This event is a special addition to the university-wide UW-Milwaukee commencement ceremony. \n\nRSVP \nProgram (PDF) \nLivestream\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nExpand All \nWhat is Convocation and how is it different than Commencement?\n\n\nThis special ceremony is an opportunity for Faculty & Staff in the Peck School of the Arts to recognize students who are graduating with bachelor and master’s degrees. The event was established in response to student requests and precedes the large 51���� Commencement. We encourage you to attend both ceremonies. \nThe convocation ceremony begins with a procession of graduating students into the Bader Concert Hall. Students are seated on stage with the Dean and Department Chairs. There will be an address with opening remarks and all graduates being recognized. Students will be called up by department\, with each department introduced by a selection of work representing their discipline. When your department is standing\, you will be called by name to walk across the stage and receive your stole (a piece of academic regalia\, much like a long scarf\, that you can wear with your cap and gown to the campus-wide Commencement ceremony). After the closing remarks and recessional\, everyone crosses the lobby to Zelazo 280 for a dessert reception. \n\n\nIs the event in-person or virtual?\n\n\nPSOA Convocation is an in-person event\, which will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person. \n\n\nWho should participate?\n\n\nAll Peck School of the Arts students who have graduated or will be graduating by any of the dates listed above along with friends and family of graduating students are welcome to attend. \n\n\nDoes it cost anything?\n\n\nThe event is free. Tickets are not required\, but we do appreciate that you RSVP so we can best plan for your enjoyment. \n\n\nCan I invite my family and friends?\n\n\nDefinitely! You will receive an email invitation to the Peck School of the Arts Graduation Convocation in early April. Feel free to pass it along to friends to attend in-person or online. \n\n\nHow many guests may I bring?\n\n\nYou may bring as many guests as you like. Please RSVP with the total number of in-person attendees so we can plan accordingly. \n\n\nWhat should I wear?\n\n\nThere is no dress code for this event. You are welcome to wear your cap and gown but most students simply wear business attire.
