The Department of Anthropology offers programs of graduate study designed to provide a broad background in all significant facets of the discipline\u2014biological, archaeological and sociocultural, analytic as well as descriptive\u2014while still encouraging specialization. It provides training both for students interested in an academic career in anthropology and for those concerned with practical issues approached from the integrative perspective of anthropology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each student\u2019s program of study includes training in anthropological theory and methods, issues and problems in sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, and physical anthropology, as well as topics that focus on the student\u2019s area of particular interest. Interdisciplinary research is actively encouraged, and many faculty and student projects involve collaborations with other departments and programs at 51ÁÔÆæ as well as a wide range of national and international institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department, in cooperation with the Milwaukee Public Museum, also offers a program leading to a Certificate in Museum Studies<\/a>. The Milwaukee Public Museum, the fourth largest natural history museum in the country, is the site for methods courses that provide students with practical experience in museum work as well as the history and theory of museums. The 51ÁÔÆæ Museum Studies program dates back to 1963 and is the oldest program of its kind in the country. Recent Museum Studies Alumni<\/a> of the program are to be found at museums and related institutions around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n
