The Animal Facility Manager or Veterinarian may determine that additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is necessary (e.g., you work in another animal facility or you are exposed to other animals on a regular basis). * Animal facility guests are not allowed to touch or handle animals. * All bio-security procedures must be followed. The following hazards are associated with animals: 1. Physical Injuries (i.e. animal bites, scratches, slip and fall, lifting) 2. Zoonotic diseases Aside from food poisonings, the overall incidence of transmission of disease-producing agents from fish to humans is low. There are, however, a number of agents that are found in fish and aquarium water that have the potential to be transmitted to humans. In general, humans contract fish-borne diseases through ingestion of infected fish tissues or aquarium water, or by contamination of lacerated or abraded skin. 3. Allergies- human sensitivity to fish proteins in the laboratory setting are rare. It remains possible, however, to become sensitized to fish proteins through inhalation or skin contact. 4. Hazardous agents-Methods exist for monitoring exposure to potentially hazardous biological, chemical, and physical agents. Protective devices are used, and other safety practices consistent with safety guidelines are in use in this facility. Potentially hazardous chemicals in the animal laboratory and animal facility include but are not limited to disinfectants, cleaning agents and anesthetics. 5. Pregnancy risks-If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, avoid touring areas where hazardous agents including radioactive material is used or stored. Inhalation of toxic chemicals and certain anesthetic vapors should be avoided especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF Wash your hands Wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) during your tour. Be aware of Safety Signage posted in the Facility I HAVE REVIEWED THE OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAM FOR VISITORS REQUESTING ACCESS TO THE AQUATIC ANIMAL FACILITIES, AND HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RISK ASSOCIATED WITH EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS AND AM PREPARED TO TOUR THE ANIMAL FACILITY.
