Keeping in mind that the goals for textbook and course materials selection are&nbsp;<strong>quality, alignment with learning outcomes, and ongoing access<\/strong>, here are some considerations for using Open Textbooks, Open Educational Resources (OER) and Library digital content. The online course&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cetl\/programs\/open-textbooks-and-oer\/#tab-s5ni-open-textbooks-and-oer-training-for-instructors\">Open Textbooks and&nbsp;OER Training<\/a> for Instructors&nbsp;provides a more thorough explanation of finding, evaluating, and adopting open and affordable course content.&nbsp;Open textbooks may not be available for all courses. Traditional textbooks can be adopted in a variety of formats. Each format has unique benefits, but also presents challenges and a range of costs for students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note the textbook submission dates for 2025-2026 are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Winterim 2026, textbook submissions are due 10\/06\/2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spring 2026, textbook&nbsp;submissions are due 11\/10\/2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summer 2026&nbsp;textbook&nbsp;submissions are due 03\/23\/2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col uwm-l-col--4 uwm-l-offset--1\"><div class=\"uwm-block-otp-nav \"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"uwm-bg-gray uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-types-of-textbooks\">Types of Textbooks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card-grid uwm-l-grid uwm-l-grid--equal-y uwm-l-grid--3\">\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-open-textbooks\">Open Textbooks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open textbooks are written by subject matter experts, peer reviewed, professionally edited, and digitally distributed as web content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open textbooks are developed and licensed for instructors to freely distribute, revise, and retain versions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Content is free for students and available on the first day of class, optimizing student success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students may incur costs for printing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-open-educational-resources-oer\">Open Educational Resources (OER)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open educational resources (OER) are high-quality, effective teaching and learning materials that provide no cost or low-cost access for students. Examples of OER content include readings, articles, images, video, audio, simulations. Course design examples include curricula, syllabi, lecture notes, and assessments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Content is free for students to use, and open for instructors to distribute, revise, and retain versions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students may incur costs for printing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card can be leveraged as course materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Licensed content is subject to Copyright.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students may incur some costs for printing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-traditional-textbooks\">Traditional Textbooks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Textbooks written by subject matter experts, edited, published, and distributed in print by a for-profit publisher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students own their textbook and can sell back their copy at the end of the semester.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the Library to put a copy of the text on 2-hour Course Reserve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Uses traditional Copyright and a for-profit sales model.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prices reflect a high rate of inflation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Due to high cost and unmet financial need, students often forgo purchasing required textbooks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>60% of students delay purchasing textbooks until their financial aid is available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-traditional-textbooks-e-books-and-rentals\">Traditional Textbooks, E-books and Rentals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some traditional textbooks can be rented in e-book format for a defined term.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Typically, it is lower cost than purchasing a textbook.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students do not own a copy of the text long-term and will not be able to sell back the text.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>E-books cannot be placed on Course Reserve in the library.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-traditional-textbooks-course-cartridges-and-supplementary-codes\">Traditional Textbooks, Course Cartridges and Supplementary \u201cCodes\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduces instructor workload since publishers provide supplementary materials (quizzes, slides) as required student purchases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Textbooks include homework and practice exercises for student practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students access these materials digitally through publisher websites or Canvas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Homework codes add extra costs beyond the textbook.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paywalled materials disadvantage students who cannot afford them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If graded assignments require a purchased code, students unable to buy it cannot complete the work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-custom-course-texts-through-publisher\">Custom course texts through publisher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Faculty can work with a publisher to create customized print or online textbooks that align with specific course objectives and feature selected chapters, potentially drawn from more than one textbook in a publisher\u2019s catalog.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student access to online texts is limited to one semester, 18 months, or other fixed duration, which prevents students from accessing materials in upper-level courses.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Print copies of custom textbooks are not eligible for buy back.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bundled content may already be available to students online through open licenses or library licenses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-past-editions\">Past editions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adopting or recommending an older edition of the selected textbook to reduce costs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Past editions are no longer in publication and available in limited quantity, making it difficult for the bookstore to source them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pricing in the online marketplace can increase with demand, undermining the goal of affordability.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students may not be able to resell or get buyback credit for past editions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--gold uwm-u-mb-40\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><div class=\"uwm-p-card--content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inclusive-access-day-one\">Inclusive Access\/Day One<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inclusive Access is a program in which publishers\u2019 contract with universities to deliver online textbook access to all students enrolled in a course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The cost of the textbook is added to the tuition bill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students who cannot afford the textbook may have limited options for access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"uwm-bg-white uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading heading-separator\" id=\"h-textbook-faqs\">Textbook FAQs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-p-lg\">All course material adoptions should be submitted to the eCampus Bookstore so that students know what the course texts will be for their courses. The bookstore collects textbook adoption data for Open Textbooks\/OER, Library materials, and traditional textbooks. If the total cost of your course materials is less than $25, ask your departmental course scheduler to assign the no\/low-cost attribute to your course section in the Schedule of Classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uwm\" data-accordion-cool-selectors=\"1\"><button class=\"uwm-p-accordion--toggle-button size-p-md\">Expand All<\/button>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">How to select textbooks at the bookstore<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkstr.com\/uwmilwaukeestore\/home\">https:\/\/www.bkstr.com\/uwmilwaukeestore\/home<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the bottom of the page, select \u201cOnline Adoptions\u201d under \u201cResources\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Log in or set up a new account.
